“Hol’ up, Mom. You’re scaring my baby. Can we talk about this later?” I gave my dad a pleading look.

“Darling, he’s right. No rush. I trust Adrian to do what’s right.” The hidden meaning behind his word was not lost to me. It was his way of saying to do the needful before they butt in again.

“Thanks, Dad.”

For extra effect, I moved to Zoey’s side. She was still staring bewilderedly at me. I placed my hand on her lower back and pulled her closer to me, and she fit right in. She felt like…

Home.

- SAFE HAVEN

ZOEY CARTER

Who the fuck does he think he is? I should have known it was all too good to be true. If Adrian Black thinks for one second that I would agree with his charade, then he must have another thing coming. Those were my thoughts as I stood glaring at my boss. I’d only agreed to save his face because I didn’t want to risk my job. I was happy with the girls, and I didn’t want to lose all of that. But I wasn’t desperate enough to agree to whatever plot he had in mind.

“You look like you have something to say, Zoey. Out with it. I’ll take it. Truthfully, I think I deserve your outburst. Feel free to cuss at me, too. The kids are in the playroom.”

“What outburst?” I asked, gritting my teeth and trying hard to refrain from hitting him or worse. A task at which I was failing miserably.

“The one I feel you’re trying hard to keep in. Judging by the murderous looks I’m receiving, I can tell you’re fighting a losing battle.” He had the guts to smirk at me.

“Why, you annoying prick! How dare you? Why would you tell your parents that I am your girlfriend? You’re not even my type, you ass.” My chest was heaving by the time I was done putting him in his place.

“Do you feel better now?” he asked smugly. The nerve of the man.

“You annoying—-”

His eyes turned black and grim. “I would watch my tone, young lady. I’m still your boss.” My eyes flared at him. The man had some balls, getting mad at me when it was he who dragged me into his lie. “If only you’d calm down and listen to me.”

“Fine,” I huffed, cocking my head to the side. “Out with it.”

“Thank you. Will you take a seat, please?”

I stumped to the nearest seat and flopped unceremoniously down in it. He flunked down beside me and ran his hand through his hair.

“Alright, so just before you stepped in, my parents were all up in my business, saying how the girls need a mother and stuff. To make it all worse, they have given me an ultimatum. And if I don’t...” he gave a soft sigh. “Let’s just say my parents can be extreme, and I don’t want to find out what they would do.”

“That still does not explain why you told them that I’m your girlfriend.”

“I was getting to that part if you’ll let me.”

“Fine. Better make it make sense.”

“I have a proposition for you.”

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. Of course, he must think I’m a fool.

“Chill, Zee. I can see the wheels turning in your head. I’m not going to ask to do the dirty deed with you,” he jested.

“Zoey.”

“What?”

“It’s Zoey. We’re not close enough for pet names, Sir.”

He gasped in mock hurt and turned to pin me with a scorching gaze.

“Marry me, Zee.”
