“Yay.”

“Can I come too?” Jason asked.

“Of course, we’re all going, luv. You should have breakfast while I go get dressed. I’ll be right back.” I turned to Eva. “Dish the children’s breakfast and pack some up too. I’ll be right back.”

After going through my closet for close to thirty minutes, wondering what kind of outfit was appropriate for a surprise visit to my fake husband’s office, I finally settled on a pair of white shorts with a small gold hoop in the front, in the shape of a belt. I paired it with a red camisole and finished it off with a cute flower-patterned jacket that hugged me. I chose a pair of white sandals that seemed to go well with the clothes. It wasn’t too casual. Neither was it too serious. It was exactly what I needed.

When I was dressed, I checked myself in the mirror, and the woman that stared back at me looked beautiful but pale. Something was eating away at me, and I didn’t know how to fix it. Brushing the thoughts aside, I applied some mascara and slapped a layer of lip gloss on. I tried to style my hair, but after a few failed attempts, I gave up and just ran my hands through it. I left it to cascade down my back. I pinched my cheeks, a trick as old as time to add a little blush to them. After a final look in the mirror, I went into his room to grab fresh clothes. To my surprise and excitement, the door was unlocked. I was hit by wistful nostalgia at the memories of the last time I was in the room. Cautioning myself before I could slip into a deep state of self-pity, I picked out a freshly-laundered shirt and a clean pair of trousers and folded them neatly into a bag. After my business was done, I shut the door and padded downstairs.

“Still nitpicking, are we? Sadly, anyone who doesn’t finish her breakfast won’t be coming with us to see Daddy,” I said, staring furtively at Aurora, who had only managed to eat a quarter of her breakfast.

“Mom, you promised,” she protested.

“Yup, and I’ll keep it as soon as you finish your breakfast. Is the food not to your liking?”

Instead of answering, she stabbed at the chicken and ripped a forkful off. She made a show of tossing it into her mouth and chewing loudly.

“Ew,” Rose chuckled.

“Hurry up. We don’t want our surprise getting ruined,” I urged.

I wasnervous as I pulled into the parking lot of Vitality Clinic. I wondered how he would react to seeing me. What if he gets upset at me? These and several other questions ran through my mind as I unlocked the car door and helped the kids out of the car.

It was easy to find him as almost all his colleagues attended our wedding, and they were most helpful in pointing me in the direction of his office. Keeping three kids in order in a busy hospital was tougher than I thought, and even more so because he wasn’t in his office when we got there. After a boring couple of minutes of waiting for him, Aurora tapped me.

“Mom, I need to go now.”

“Right now, baby?” She nodded vehemently. I looked around, confused. “Alright, baby. Come, let’s find a restroom.”

Not wanting to leave Rose and Jason alone in the office for fear of what they’d get to in my absence, I had them tag along with us. Luck was on my side as I found a restroom quite easily.

“Hey bud, think you could stay here with your sister while I go in and attend to Aurora?”

“Yes, Mommy.”

“Please, do not wander off. It’s a large hospital,” I instructed and then went in with Aurora, who was clasping her hands in between her thighs. After she had done her business, I held her up to wash her hands. When we returned to the doorway, Jason and Rose were in their father’s arms. Aurora joined the party immediately after she set her sights on them. People were staring at the mushy scene while I stood rooted to the spot. I didn’t know what to say when he straightened and approached me.

“People are watching,” he muttered. Before I could process his words, his lips settled on mine in a toe-curling kiss. I had waited so long to feel their sweet comforts again, so when I did, I didn’t hesitate to welcome him. I clung to his overalls as he ravished my mouth. I moaned when his tongue snuck past my lips into my mouth to stoke the already blazing fire of passion in my nether. I didn’t care that we were in his hospital or about the small crowd that was starting to form. All that mattered was the man before me and what he was doing to me.

When I could finally breathe, I pulled back and snuck a look around to see a delighted look on every face except one.

Sasha.

I remembered her from the wedding, and her attitude had given me the creeps. Turned out it wasn’t all in my head, judging by the murderous look she had directed at me. I made a mental note to ask Adrian if anything was going on with her so as to know what I was up against. When the crowds reduced, everyone returning to their business, he grabbed the kids and asked me to follow him. When we were in the safety of his office, he turned to me with angry eyes.

“What are you doing here? Why did you bring the kids here? Do you know the dangers and bacteria you just exposed them to?” he bellowed.

I couldn’t help the dread that traveled up my spine. “I just brought you breakfast and a change of clothes.”

“Well, thanks. Please leave and don’t come back to my workplace again.” He placed kisses on his girl’s forehead and patted a wary Jason on the shoulder. “I’ll see you at home.”

I walked out of the office with what was left of my dignity and a torrent of overwhelming emotions.
