“No,” Zane confirmed. “I would imagine the D.C. police have your place pretty well staked out. We’ve got the Secret Service and the CIA working on getting your name cleared, but I think they’re all a little more worried about extracting our foreign operatives and protecting everyone still out in the field. Especially now that you’re safe and secure in this building.”

“Fair enough,” I agreed. “I guess I’ll just bunk in with you and the president.”

“Are you drunk?” Zane asked, narrowing his gaze at me.

“Nah, he only had four or five shots,” Pony chimed in. “You know, to take the edge off being shot and all.”

“I think I’ve got some pain killers left,” Zane said. “You know, I just got shot, too. Had to have surgery and everything.”

“Piss off,” Raptor told him, rolling his eyes. “We’ve all been shot. Leave the man alone.”

“I’ve never been shot,” Pony said. “I must be better at defending myself than you all are.”

“Keep it up and we can change that right now,” Merlin offered, grinning over at Max.

“Okay,” Zane said, glaring around the room at each of us. “It’s late. We’re getting punchy, Cookiewasshot today, and unless new intel bursts through that door, I don’t think we’re going to get anything else accomplished tonight. Let’s call it a day and we’ll reconvene at o-eight-hundred tomorrow.” He turned back to me. “You want something for the pain?”

“I’ll pop some aspirin when I get upstairs,” I promised him. “It’s not really that bad.”

“Come to my room,” Pony said walking up next to us as Merlin and Raptor walked out of the room. “I want to check your wounds and change the bandages before you go to sleep.”

It was a perfect cover, and most likely, he really would play nursemaid again for me. But I was seriously hoping that wasn’t all that was going to happen when we got up there. Yes, I was in pain. But more than that…I just really fucking wanted to kiss him.

“Hey,” I said to Zane as he turned to leave. “Can I get Amazon delivery to the White House?”

“You can get anything you want,” Zane assured me. “Talk to Jenni, Spencer’s secretary, and just tell her what you need.”

“You expect me to ask the president’s secretary to buy me underwear?” I glared at Zane. “Seriously?”

“Well, you should have thought about that before you blew up a bridge,” he said, shrugging before spinning on his heel and walking out.

“I can run out and get you stuff,” Pony offered. “I have to get my stuff from the hotel anyway.”

I reached out and snagged him around the waist with one arm, jerking him into my chest. His eyes widened slightly, and his lips ticked up as if he were fighting a smile, but as I lowered my mouth toward his, he didn’t pull away.

In the middle of the Situation Room in the White House, probably the least romantic place I could have ever chosen, I kissed him for the first time.

His lips parted and I slowly slid my tongue between them, tasting the sweetness of his mouth, inhaling his warm exhale of breath as my fingers slid up his back, under his shirt and over his smooth, hot skin.

We broke the kiss and he leaned his forehead against mine, his fingers playing over my forearms and causing the hairs there to stand on end.

“Wow,” he whispered. “What do I get if I offer to detail your car?”

“Shut the fuck up and get upstairs,” I growled. “Right now.”

Chapter Ten

~Max~

“I really do want to check your wounds,” I told Seamus as we walked into my room, and I shut the door behind us. “And you should take something for the pain.”

“I’ll be fine,” he insisted.

“Okay, then take off your shirt.” I walked over to my go-bag and pulled the first aid kit out of it, turning back to find Cookie standing next to the bed shirtless.

When he’d kissed me, it had caught me completely off guard. Yes, I wanted to kiss him. I wanted to do way more than that, actually. I just hadn’t expected him to want it as much. And I certainly hadn’t expected him to initiate.

“Are you just going to stand there gawking at me?” he teased.
