“What? I wouldn’t have done that. They’re the best liquor supplier in the region. That’s insanity. There has to be some kind of mistake.”

“I figured, but they won’t talk to me about it. You’re going to have to call them.”

“To hell with that. You call them and tell them I’m on my way over there.”

“Will do, sorry about this, June.”

“No way. Thanks for calling me. Hopefully we can fix it in time for tomorrow night’s crowd.”

“Fingers crossed,” she says and then hangs up. I click back over to Ben.

“Sorry about that, Ben.”

“Something wrong, Junie?” he asks, his voice concerned.

“Mess up with my liquor order. I’m going to have to head over to Holden’s.”

“Damn it, Junie, I don’t like you traveling this time of day by yourself in that area.”

“You do know I’m a grown woman, right?” I huff, rolling my eyes.

“Trust me, Baby, I amsoaware of that,” he purrs, making the inside of my thighs grow damp. I don’t know why I keep putting him off. I want him to make love to me. I think I’m afraid if we go that far, it will change things between us too drastically. I don’t want to rock the boat, but at the same time, I’m getting weaker and weaker.

“I better get,” I tell him, smiling and feeling cared about. Ben makes me feel that way often.

“You still going to be able to meet me at the house?” he asks, and my smile deepens.

“I’ll be there, Sheriff.”

“Keep calling me that, Junie. If you refuse to use my name, I’ll bring my handcuffs…”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“Your mouth is writing some big checks, Junie. I’m going to be collecting on them someday soon, you know.”

“Looking forward to it. I better get, Ben.”

“See you soon, Baby. Buckle up and keep your doors locked.

I feel warm all over. I don’t think anyone has ever worried about me before, except maybe my brother, but it never made me feel… special.

“Will do, you be careful out there too, Ben.”

“Always,” he says and a moment later the phone goes dead. I stare at it, already missing him. I’ve got it bad for him…

Damn it.

Junie

“What do you mean I severed my account? That’scrazyHolden.”

“Junie, I don’t know what to tell you. Your bartender called and told me you wanted it canceled. He said you were sick of my watered-down alcohol. He used those exact words, and I got to tell you, Junie, you know better than that shit. I sell quality products at the best fucking price you’re going to find in this area.”

I sigh, rubbing the tension at the back of my neck.

“I know that, Holden. It’s why I came to you in the first place. I don’t know what’s going on, but I promise you, whoever called, it wasn’t under my instruction. Did the bartender at least give a name?”

“You don’t know your own bartender?” Holden looks at me, his eyes hard. He’s not budging an inch. Whoever this asshole was pissed him off big time. The problem is I can’t survive without a good supplier. I could go through the other option, but the price was twice as much, and the quality was nowhere near what Holden offers. I need him and he knows it.
