Call Me.

It doesn’t take long, a couple of minutes at the most, but Junie’s phone rings. I drop the sign and answer the phone.

“You know how to take direction really good, Rat Boy. That’s going to come in handy for you in prison. You’ll make a great little prison bitch.”

“Fuck you. You think you’re so big? You didn’t do shit. You found my cameras, so what? That doesn’t change anything. I’m going to get Juniper and there’s not a thing you can do to stop me!” Greg yells into the phone, screaming so loud that his voice cracks.

“That’s where you’re wrong, Rat Boy. This ends tonight. Do you like handcuffs? I’d hate to clamp them on your wrists, and you sport a chubby into holding. Big Mike is there tonight. He will eat a little piss-ant like you up. Then again, that might be doing you a favor. You know, get you used to a little soap-on-the-rope play before you’re shipped to the big house.”

“Fuck you! Do you think you can scare me? You don’t scare me, you asshole. You’re going to do exactly what I tell you and if you don’t, I’ll make you suffer.”

“It can’t be any more agonizing than being forced to hear your voice, Greggie.”

“Shred! My name is Shred!”

“You really are a pathetic asshole, you know that? What kind of shit-for-brains coward has to plant cameras in a woman’s house to get off? And I bet you got off, didn’t you, Greg? Laid there in whatever piece of shit hole you’re hiding out in and beat your meat while I was here in Junie’s house, being the man you could never be, and stretching her tight little cunt so much she screamed in pleasure. Poor Junie, all those years with you and she couldn’t even feel your dick. She had to come all this way to see what having a real man felt like.”

“I’m going to kill you!” Greg screams.

“Did you whack off watching how a real man handled his woman in bed, Greggie?

“You fucking bastard. Put Juniper on this phone right now!”

“Not happening. You’re never getting around Juniper ever again.”

“She’smine. She belongs tome. I won’t let you take her away from me. I have to have her. She’s theonethat willfixeverything,” he roars in my ear like the pathetic bitch that he is.

“That’s where you’re wrong. Junie is magical She can heal a man inside and out, I’ll give you that. She’s a once in a lifetime kind of special. But you? Shit, you’re not a man. You’re a spoiled little boy with a useless dick who gets his kicks trying to destroy something beautiful. Juniper isn’t going to see you again. She’s too far above you. She always was, you just never appreciated the fact.”

“You’re wrong. You get her on the phone now!”

I look over at Danny and he’s grinning. He hands me a piece of paper. An address. The fucker has been hiding out in Myra Crump’s house. She’s been living with her daughter in Louisiana since she broke her hip a few months back.Got you, you fucking bastard.

“Not going to happen, Greggie. I tell you what I will do. I’m going to show you what happens when you mess with my woman, but first…” I lean up taking the camera in my hand and I give it a big yank disconnecting it so that the bastard can’t see inside Junie’s house anymore.

“Turn my camera back on,” he screams like a little kid. I laugh, the sound not of humor but of disgust and victory.

“Not happening, but guess how long you’ve been on the phone, Greggie? I’m coming for you and trust me when I tell you, there’s no getting away from me.”

“But—”

“See you soon,” I warn him, then click off the phone running to the car.

“I’ll follow,” Lodge calls out.

“Fuck no. You guys stay here with Junie. Call dispatch and have them send officers out. I’m getting this motherfucker,” I growl, starting the car up and throwing it into gear.

“Ben, be careful!” Junie cries out. I don’t answer her, because she couldn’t hear me. I’m already peeling out of the driveway.

Ben

It was stupid letting the bastard know I was coming after him, but I couldn’t stop myself. I wanted him to piss his pants, I won’t even deny it. Luckily, the Crump house was pretty close to Junie’s house. I’m barreling down the street, my sirens blaring. As I weave around the traffic—which thankfully is just a car here or there—I see a white Vette pull out of the driveway, going so fast it fishtails. I know that’s him. The fucker definitely has expensive taste. I should have had the citizens of Stone Lake looking for expensive automobiles. If I had a free hand, I’d smack myself.

I press harder on the accelerator. My car is supercharged, and I can keep up with him okay on these back roads and streets, but if the fucker hits the Interstate, it’s all over. I can’t let that happen.

I manage to gain some distance on him as we approach the back roads that lead out toward the shipyard. My one advantage is that I know this area better than he does. That means, right now I know that he’s headed toward a dead end. There’s nothing on this road but the old shipyard which dead ends with the lake. If he crashes into Stone Lake, I have him. If he stops and decides to try and stay out of the water to go on foot, then, I for sure have him.

I just need to make sure that he doesn’t take one of the side streets. If he does that, it could take him out on the interstate. There’s no way I could keep up with him there. That’s not an option. I won’t let Junie go through any more than she already has. I have to stop him, for her.
