My phone beeped, and I groaned. “Crap, I have to get it. It might be Juliet.” He reluctantly let my arms go and I checked my phone. It was, in fact, her, making sure I was still alive. She was getting paranoid that Ryzen was going to come to the apartment. Not likely, but you never knew with him. I sent her a message telling her to meet me at the office in thirty minutes. “I have to go. She’s covering for me because—well, I’m not supposed to be out.”

He scoffed, and I jerked my head in his direction. “Don’t.” I shook my head.

We went downstairs, and I grabbed my clothes, pulling them on as he did the same. His movements were jerky, the air in the room filling with tension. I didn’t want the night to end like that. Not after everything that had just happened.

“Nova.” He stood in front of the fireplace, rubbing the back of his neck. “We need—”

“Cian, I know. But not right now.” I tugged my boots on and zipped them up. “I don’t want to ruin what just happened between us. OK?”

His body was tense. It was rolling off him in waves. He stood with his chin high as he wrapped his belt around his waist. I could tell he was angry, that he wanted to say more. I only hoped my pathetic attempt at silencing him was good enough.

“Where am I taking you?” He grabbed my elbow and walked me to the front door.

“To your club. I’ll grab a cab back to my office.” I adjusted my wig, making sure it was on the right way.

“You are not taking a fucking cab in the city.” The tone in his voice stopped me in my tracks. He pressed his chest against my back, wrapping his arm around my stomach. “It’s too dangerous.” His lips brushed across my neck, making my knees weak.

“I took one to the club. I can take one home. It’s fine, really.” I trailed off as his fingers moved lower, toward the zipper of my jeans. I rested my head on his shoulder, ready to let him fuck me again in the middle of the woods if necessary.

My phone beeped again, and I groaned. Juliet was letting me know they were on the way and would be there soon. “I have to go.”

A few minutes later, we were driving back the same way we had come in. There was nothing but silence; the tension in the car was suffocating. I bounced my leg up and down and stared at my hands for most of the drive. I wished I had a plan. Answers. But I had nothing. I didn’t know where this left us or what my next move was. The only thing that was certain was I needed to make a choice on how this whole thing was going to end, and I was terrified of picking the wrong answer.

He pulled into the underground garage at the club and parked, turning off the lights. I let out the breath I had been holding and turned to him. “Look, I know that—”

His lips were on mine so quickly I didn’t have time to finish my sentence. He dragged me into his lap. His kiss was filled with hunger, need, even more so than an hour ago. His mouth was everywhere, and I gripped his shoulders as he devoured me. I never wanted this feeling to end. Every cell in my body was on fire. He yanked at my jeans and I got one leg out and was back in his lap with the snap of my fingers.

We fucked in his car. Fast, fearless, uncontrollable lust taking over. The need to feel him inside of me was greater than I had ever experienced. We came at the same time, our tongues intertwined as we moaned out our release.

I rested my forehead on his, trying to catch my breath.

“Look what you do to me, my little star.” He pushed my hair behind my ear. His kiss was much more tender this time, soft and longing. I was torn. I knew I had to leave, but every cell in my body was screaming for me to stay. “So bright and beautiful, shining for me.” He nestled his face in my neck, kissing me there. My phone beeped, and he sighed.

I pulled my pants back and fixed my makeup in the mirror while he made a call outside of the car. Time to face reality. He opened the door and helped me step down. A man I had never seen before stepped out of the elevator and nodded at Cian.

“Ricardo is going to take you to your office.” Cian pulled me into his arms, grasped my chin and kissed me with such ferociousness that you wouldn’t think we had just had sex twice in the past two hours. He turned to Ricardo. “Get her there safely, or I’ll kill you.” Something in his voice made me realize that he was very, very serious.

Ricardo gulped and nodded, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. “Madam, this way.” He waved his hand toward the car.

There was no point in arguing. I should just take the cab, but something told me if I tried to fight Cian on it, I wouldn’t win. So I just went along with it. I climbed into the SUV and turned to wave to Cian, but he was already in the elevator. So much for a sweet send-off.

I rolled my eyes at myself for being dramatic. That was what happened when you had the best sex of your life. You lost your mind in the process.

We headed to my office, Ricardo only asking simple questions like if the temperature was OK or if I wanted to listen to music. I shook my head to both, needing to mentally prepare myself for what I was going to tell Juliet. What was I going to say? A million thoughts raced through my mind, that anxious feeling gnawing in the pit of my stomach again.

Juliet was already there by the time I arrived. I snuck through the back door and found her eating Oreo ice cream from the container, sitting on top of her desk. Her mouth fell open when I walked in. Was it that obvious?

“Oh, no, Nova. What did you do?”

Crap.

Chapter Seventeen

“No fucking way!” Juliet crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair. “Ryzen’s been lying about everything? I can’t wrap my head around it.”

“Tell me about it,” I muttered.

After assuring Owen that we were tough enough to stay in the office alone after midnight, I’d locked us inside and told Juliet everything. Well, almost everything. I hadn’t told her the details of Cian’s past, about his foster siblings and what his father had put them through, or about how his father had died. It wasn’t my story to tell. Deep down, I didn’t want to share his pain with anyone else, no matter how close Juliet and I were.
