“Don’t be. I’ll take care of everything, just like I always do. I love you, Nova.” He reached over, brushing his lips against mine. I moved back away from him, shaking my head.

“Sorry, I, um, can’t.” I pulled the blanket up to my neck and scooted away from him.

“That’s OK.” He poured water into a cup, handing it to me with two pills. “Drink this, it’ll help with the pain.”

I hesitated for a moment, and he grinned. “Be a good girl, Nova.”

The man sitting in the corner of the room cleared his throat. Ryzen snapped his head towards him and motioned for him to come over. “This is Valik, your bodyguard, although I guess you wouldn’t remember that considering your current situation.” There was a hint of laughter in his voice.

I stopped mid-sip and looked at him. Had he just made a joke about my condition? No, he couldn’t have. This Valik guy peered down at me, his face twisted with concern as I took both pills. “Hello.” I offered a smile.

“Hi, Nova.” He let out a deep breath.

Ryzen clapped his hands together, his eyes gleaming. “Great, I have to get some work done, but I’ll come back to see you soon, my love.” He leaned down and pressed his lips to my forehead. “Get some rest.” He nodded to Valik, who followed him out into the hallway and shut the door behind them.

This was all too much to process. How could you just forget a part of your life? My smiling face stared back at me, and I flipped the photos over. I would remember. I had to.

The voices in the hallways grew louder and I flung the blankets off and walked over to the door.

“I’ll send you right back where I found you. I’m doing what’s best for her. How dare you question me.” It was Ryzen, and he sounded angry.

“But sir…”

“No! Watch her and report back to me. That’s your job. Do it. Or else.”

I held my hand against the door and leaned so that I wouldn’t tip over. The pills. They were making me drowsy already. What the hell were they, horse tranquilizers? The room spun slightly, and I stumbled back to bed, letting my head hit the pillow as I passed out.

Day 56

Everything fucking hurt. My head, my arm, everything. It was like being stabbed with little tiny needles all over my body. I was exhausted, not only physically but mentally as I struggled with the loss of my memory and of my best friend. Maybe I could fix it. There had to be a way to make things right. It was like I had just been with her yesterday, and now she was just… gone. No stupid fight could have been worth losing her over. Non-amnesiac me was really starting to piss me off.

Valik sat at the end of my bed, reading to me from a magazine. Every time I had opened my eyes over the last few days, he had been there talking or reading to me, even though I hadn’t heard a word he was saying. The pills they were giving me were strong, too strong. I decided I liked him; his eyes were kind and he acted like his job was to make me laugh.

I thought it was odd that I wasn’t in a hospital recovering, but Ryzen said that because of his wealth the paparazzi would be all over us at the hospital, so it was better to rest and recover at home in private.Ourhome, apparently—one I couldn’t even remember. I was staying in a large bedroom with a giant window that I could see out of from my bed. There were trees as far as you could see, and when Valik opened the window, the sound of water nearby.

He flipped through the pages, reading off the top twenty ways to please your man. “Hmph, I don’t think you wanna know what number twenty was, Nova.” He clucked his tongue. “Definitely not appropriate.” He chuckled and tossed the magazine into my lap.

A face stared up at me, and I blinked slowly, focusing on it.

How I learned to trust and find love again! Actress Phoebe Crane details her quest to find her soulmate.

I knew this from somewhere. But where? The realization sent a jolt of happiness through me as I looked at the publication date; it was only three months old.

“I’ve seen this before.” I held up the magazine.

“Really?” He leaned forward and smiled. “That’s awesome, Nova. Do you remember anything else, like where you saw it?”

Where had I seen it?Think. Think!

My shoulders sagged and I shook my head. “No.”

“That’s OK, it’s still progress. Ryzen will be happy to hear it.”

Ryzen. I hadn’t seen him once since the other day. But I guessed I couldn’t say that for sure, since I had been sleeping for most of the time. Today was different. Today I wanted to get out of this damn bed and outside.

“Can you take me outside? I’m tired of lying here.”

His mouth set in a flat line, and he hesitated. “Well, you’re supposed to rest.”
