“Kaviathin,” I muttered.

“He told you where I was?” Her voice quivered and she rubbed the cast on her arm, almost as if she was trying to pull something out of it.

“Not willingly.” My voice was low, cold, and I clenched my fists. “There are some things better left unsaid, Nova.” I exhaled sharply and brought her back down to my chest, wrapping my arms around her.

She didn’t need to know that I had turned into a monster with the snap of Goodacre’s fingers. As the days had gone by, and I wasn’t getting the answers I needed, I’d started trailing Kaviathin. But I’d soon realized that he had too many guards around him. Everywhere he went, at least ten men would follow him. So we’d switched tactics.

The Mafia only cared about two things: family and money. And if you were prepared to take those away from them, then you’d better be ready for the consequences.

Juliet had cozied up to a low-level guard in one of Kaviathin’s bars while Eros made sure the brothers stayed away. She’d enticed him back to her place, and when they got there, my brothers and I had been waiting. He had been hesitant at first to tell us what we wanted, and I’d taken out all my anger and frustration on him until my hands were covered in blood. I didn’t care. There were no regrets. I would do it all over again if it meant finding Nova.

After two days, he’d finally given us what we needed. Althazair was trying to offload an arsenal of guns and was meeting with some buyers that night in the parking garage adjacent to a storage facility.

Eros, Orin and I waited until they were all there and we masked up and loaded our weapons. They never saw us coming. There were eight of them, and only three of us, but it didn’t matter. We got the jump on them before they even had time to blink. We jumped out of the van, pointing our guns at them. My eyes landed on Althazair, and I hit him on the side of the head with my gun, knocking him down to his knees. I pressed my gun against his temple and pointed my other gun at the three men behind him. “Move, and he’s dead.”

The other group of men, the buyers, all dressed in gray suits, tried to rush behind their car, but Eros shot a spray of bullets at the car, making them all stop in their tracks. “Put your fucking hands up, all of you!” Orin roared, and when one of the buyers reached like he was going for a gun, Eros jammed the butt of his rifle into his stomach and knocked him down to the ground.

“Are you all prepared to fucking die? One more person moves, and I’ll put a bullet in your fucking head!” I commanded, and they all froze.

Thora and Juliet jumped out from the back of our van and loaded it up with the duffel bags of money and weapons.

Althazair had sneered, spitting on the ground near my shoe. “You just dug your own grave, friend.”

“Tell Kaviathin I’ll be in touch.” I aimed my gun and shot him in the back of the leg. He keeled over, screaming in agony, but no one else moved. Not a fucking inch.

It was only hours later that I was able to find out where Nova was. We took a picture of the money and the guns in front of an incinerator and sent it to Kaviathin. He called less than a minute later.

“You took my money and shot my brother. You’ve got quite the set of balls on you.” His voice was calm and controlled, but I knew. I knew the rage that was just underneath his cool exterior.

“I know you know where Ryzen is. Tell me, or I’ll fucking burn it all.”

He was quiet for a moment and exhaled sharply.

“Ten seconds, Kaviathin.”

“Lilly Island, off the coast of Maine.”

I hung up before he could say another word.

Eros and Orin had looked at me, their bodies just as tense as mine. “She’s in Maine.” My heart roared in my chest. “Burn it all.”

There was no honor among thieves. Kaviathin should have known that.

I had no choice but to call Delove and tell him. Who knew how many people Goodacre had on that island with him. And although I was fueled by rage and revenge, I wasn’t stupid enough to show on my own. I met the FBI at the airstrip and we flew a chopper to Maine and were on the island soon after.

“He gave me a knife to protect myself,” Nova said. “I don’t know why he did it.”

My jaw clenched and I gripped her to me. I knew why he had given her the knife. The past was trying to rear its ugly head. But I wouldn’t let it. I had been down this road with him before, and it wasn’t going to end well. There was only one true thing I knew for sure. Kaviathin was no fucking saint, and if he came for me again, I would be more than ready this time.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Day 145

Nova

I bobbed my head to the music, sipping on my drink as Juliet danced with Eros just feet away from me. Cian had business to take care of tonight at the Hellfire Club, one of the two clubs he owned downtown. The old gothic building was huge with over three floors filled with multiple bars, performers, and people dancing. A group of performers were on a stage to my right dancing with fire hoops, and I stared at them in awe. Cian had insisted that I come with him. He was so possessive now, always watching over me and making sure I was safe, that he knew where I was at all times.

When I had to repeat my story over and over again to the FBI those months ago, Cian had become so enraged, his whole body had shaken when I told them about all the pills Ryzen had forced me to take, and the benzodiazepines that contributed to my amnesia. Ugh, I hated thinking about that. I was better now, my memory completely restored, although I would love nothing more than to forget about Ryzen Goodacre.
