“Oh, hush, you two. You know how much Victoria means to us and to you. Your birthdays are right around the corner. You know this event would be a perfect place for a proposal.” She sang out the last word, and I cringed.
“Thanks, Mom. We have it handled,” Declan growled.
“I don’t see why you feel the need to wait any longer. You need to be at least engaged by the summer. Why are you holding off?” Leave it to our mother to remind us we were on borrowed time. If we didn’t announce an engagement by the summer, she was going to for us.
Why had we ever agreed to an arranged marriage?
I looked to Declan. His face told me he felt the same as I did.
“Thank you, Mother, for the reminder. We must be off. We have work to do.”
“Oh sweeties, you both work way too hard over there on that ranch. Please tell me this is almost out of your systems, and you are coming home to take over the family business.”
“I wish we could, but we can’t. Love you. Goodbye.” Declan came over and disconnected the call, cutting off her reply.
