I chuckled. “Whoever that was, I’m thankful. Now, let’s work on a way to get Alex back.”

* * *

After a full weekof Alex not taking our calls or returning our texts, we were running out of options besides barging into her clinic. If she was mad at us now, there was no way she would forgive us if we embarrassed her at work.

Work. That was it. Our way to get her to listen.

In another three weeks, she needed to do another checkup for Stardust. We had to think of something before then.

“The twins just checked in. They said they may pop in for a visit in a month or two,” Declan said when he came into my office. He looked as down as I felt. We were both just going through the motions.

“With Stardust doing so well, do you want to proceed with the new plan? The breeding program will keep us busier than ever.”

He nodded. “I think it’ll be a good opportunity for others to show their strengths. I know Travis is from a breeding family. He can help lead it. You know it’s been in the back of his mind since we asked him about it a few years ago. And it makes good business sense for us.”

“Andrew and Caleb will be back soon. They weren’t expecting us to start up a whole new program when they went away for school. Do you think they’ll mind if we ask Alex to head the breeding program?”

“I don’t think so. They’ll have their hands full with the cattle and traveling with the horse team.” He swallowed hard and asked the question we were both afraid to say out loud. “Do you think Alex will accept the position?” Was she willing to still work with us, even if we’d destroyed every chance of getting her back or seeing her again?

“It’s worth a shot. If she turns us down, then we can go with Plan B.”

“What’s Plan B?”

I closed my eyes and hung my head.“I have no idea. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.” I lifted my head when I heard Declan speak.

“Hey, Mikel. Can you come in here for a minute?”

I looked up and saw Declan on his phone. I guess now was as good a time as any to work out the details.Mikel handled all of our contracts with outside staff.

Mikel entered my office and dropped into the seat next to Declan. He brought his pen and notepad and took notes as we went over the plan for the breeding program. We wanted to include the extra funding like we did with Dr. Henry. If we were going to monopolize Alex’s time like we had Dr. Henry’s, we wanted to make sure the clinic was safe. The town needed their vet more than we needed one.

“Okay. I’ll go draft something up really quick, and I’ll be back with it tomorrow.” Mikel headed to his office upstairs.

Even if we got something down, we still needed to get her to speak to us.

It killed me not knowing how she was doing. Was she okay or was she heartbroken like we were? I missed her telling me how her day was at the clinic and having her next to me in bed at night.

“You think she’ll talk to us soon?” Declan asked.

I shrugged.

“Do you think Dr. Henry has any thoughts? If he doesn’t want to kill us for breaking her heart that is.”

I jerked my head up. “Let’s call him. Maybe he knows a way we can get through to her.”

I dialed his number. Just when I thought it would go to voicemail, he picked up.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the Kingstons. I was wondering when I would get your call,” he answered, his voice slightly muffled.

“Dr. Henry? Did we catch you at a bad time?” Something was off.

“Just getting my ass kicked, that’s all.”

“Where are you? Do we need to come get you?” Declan leaned over my desk.

“One moment, gentleman.” A rustling noise sounded through the phone, and then the line disconnected.

I looked to Declan. “Can we track his phone? I didn’t like the sound of him.”
