I crossed my arms.“Doc. What’s wrong?” My voice was deep as I tried to keep my emotions in check. Whatever it was had to be serious.

“She’s going to kill me for telling you this.” He took a deep breath. “When the article came out about you guys, Alex’s ex reached out. He’s blackmailing her for more money, even though the divorce agreement is done. He threatened to expose the three of you if she didn’t give it to him.”

“What?” I yelled. “Why didn’t she come to us?”

“She’s trying to protect you. He told her to get the money from you.” His face landed in his hands.

My heartbeat sounded in my ears. I picked up my phone and hit the speed dial.

“Duke, I need you in my office right now.”

There was no way I’d let this fucker continue to hurt our woman.

ALEX

Spencer and I went over the numbers again and put together a new fee schedule in order to combat the loss of the King’s Ranch contract. We had only a few more months left, and we needed to get people adjusted to the new rates before the contract ended.

My phone vibrated on the desk.

It had been ringing non-stop for days, so I turned it on vibrate so I didn’t have to listen to the dinging. It was starting to haunt my dreams.

Randol was relentless, no matter how many times I told him no.

He wouldn’t care if I had to sell my clinic to get him the money. I had no idea what I saw in him in the first place. He was a horrible human being. A total piece of garbage.

“Now we need to get something in writing to give everyone on their next visit. Maybe we can post something in the office as well.” I stacked the papers on my desk while Spencer saved everything on the computer.

“Is there anything else I can help you with, boss?” Spencer’s eyes drooped, even though it was only noon. He’d been working with me non-stop for the last few days. He was just as dedicated to the clinic as I was.

“No, Spencer. Thank you for all your help. Why don’t you go home now? Get some rest. We’re closed tomorrow, so go do something fun if you can.” I squeezed his shoulder. “I’ll close up shop. You enjoy the rest of your day.”

“You sure?” His dedication was admirable, but I needed him at his best. And if he was exhausted, he’d be no help to me.

“Definitely.” I smiled at him. He didn’t need to see I was stressed and desperate. It wasn’t his job to fix my messes.

“Have a good rest of the day and call if you need me.”

“I will. Now get out of here.” I shooed him out of my office.

I settled in my chair and turned the radio on. I wanted to clear my head from everything. Except the song that came on next was the one Declan and I danced to at the gala.

I let my head fall into my hands.

My chest ached thinking of them. I missed them so much.

It hurt they didn’t trust me enough to tell me everything. They’d told me a little about Tori and how their parents had picked someone for them to marry, but I never imagined it would have come down to an arranged marriage. I was such an idiot. What girl sends a closet full of clothes to a home unless she’s expecting to move in?

It didn’t matter that they didn’t like her like that. They were still going to go through with the marriage unless they could get someone else to agree to marry them.

I shook my head. Not my problem.Even if I wanted to run back into their arms, I couldn’t.

I glanced at my phone. Four unopened messages and two missed calls, all from Randol. The phone vibrated in my hand, the picture of a devil popping up on the screen. It was like he knew when I looked at my phone.

“What, Randol?” I was done with the pleasantries. He didn’t deserve anything except my distain.

“This isn’t over, Alex. I will find another way. No matter who you throw at me.” His voice was rough. Then the line went dead.

I pulled my phone away and looked at the screen.
