I loved food and usually wasn’t shy about how I showed that enjoyment. A flicker of irritation ran up my spine. I hope I haven’t offended them.
“No, please. It helps me know I did a good job.” She took her own bite and moaned like I had. “Oh yes, I totally nailed it tonight, if I do say so myself.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. Having Jessie here put me at ease. That was, until Declan’s leg brushed against mine again. I slammed my thighs together, only to have his hand graze mine as he reached for his water glass.
Oh, God. This dinner was going to be torture.
The lights flickered briefly, and I froze. Were we about to lose power? I wasn’t thrilled about being stuck in the dark while staying in an unfamiliar house. And I couldn’t help but wonder in a house this big, could we stay warm enough to make it through the storm?
“Don’t worry. We have backup generators on every building and house. Each house also has solar panels, so we have power even when we get disconnected from the city.” Declan laid a hand on my forearm.
The warmth of his touch seeped into me, calming my jangled nerves and making another set of nerves tingle along every part of my body.
DECLAN
Icouldn’t help the smile that stretched across my face as I watched the beautiful red head respond to my touch. Each time she squirmed in her chair, desire rolled through me. I wanted to see what other things I could do to make her squirm.
I reluctantly pulled my hand off her forearm. Was the rest of her body that soft? I had to know. If only I could get Thomas on board. I knew she desired us. She didn’t overtly flirt with either of us, but I noticed the subtle changes in her each time Thomas or I were near. Her bright green eyes darkened, she always seemed a little flustered, and a lovely blush would spread across her cheeks. The times I caught her gaze lingering on both of us told me she felt something flaring between us.
I wanted to give in and go after her, but Thomas had already declared we wouldn’t. The agreement with our parents was almost up, which meant if we hadn’t married by then, we were forced to honor the arranged marriage with our friend Victoria—something none of us wanted, including her.
“How do you like your room, Dr. Brooks? Is there anything you might need that we can get for you?” I shoved another mouthful of the delicious dinner in my mouth.
“Alex.” She turned to me. “And the room is lovely. Thank you. Jessie showed me around. Your house is beautiful.”
“Thank you. Make yourself at home while you’re here. Feel free to any of the clothing in that room if it fits. Our friend back home relies on retail therapy when she gets upset, and she ships everything here. She won’t miss a thing. I promise.”
“Okay, thanks.”
“So, Alex. Since you’re staying here for a few days, there’s something you should know,” Jessie chimed in. She pleaded with us to be the one to tell Alex, and Thomas and I agreed it might be easier coming from her.
“What’s that?”
“Um. Well, I wanted to introduce you to my husband.”
“You’re married?”
“Yes.”
“Please tell me it’s to someone in this room.”
Jessie laughed and lifted her hand toward Stefan. “Stefan is my husband.” She turned and kissed him on the cheek, then she turned and kissed Mikel on the lips.
The clatter of Alex’s fork on her plate echoed around the dining room.
“Jessie!” Alex squeaked.
“And Mikel is my other husband.” Jessie smiled at Alex. “Mikel and Stefan are from Cosland, where they marry in groups. Both are my husband in Cosland’s eyes.”
“Uh, I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything. I just wanted you to know so you don’t get the wrong idea when you see the three of us together.”
“They aren’t the only ones with this kind of relationship on King’s Ranch. Blake and Grace also have multiple men. We don’t make it known to the people outside the ranch, but we thought you should know.” I turned to face Alex.
She looked at each of us. When her eyes locked on mine, they were wide with surprise, but I could see something else in them, too.
