“Your dad removed himself from the Society today, officially giving his spot to Morgana. Do you know the rules for leaving the Kronos Society?” I shake my head afraid anything I say might cause him to stop talking. “Contrary to popular belief, people can leave with their life intact if the Ruler allows it. However, the tattoo needs to be removed by fire or blade.”

Oh my gods, I think I’m going to be sick.

“Do you mean—”

Kai doesn’t allow me to finish my sentence. “Yes, it means I burned Alexander’s tattoo from his body while he was held down,” he deadpans like it’s nothing, but his eyes betray the way he feels about what he’s done.

I should feel sickened by the words and the thought of what my husband has done to my dad, yet I feel nothing. Well, not exactly nothing… I feel bad that Kai is clearly upset.

“You did what you had to do,” I say, barely recognizing my own voice with how monotone it is. “He knew the rules and should be glad you let him leave alive. Not that it matters since he’s dying, anyway.” I add the last part as a bitter afterthought.

Kai rears back like I’ve slapped him, his eyes turning to slits. “Are you fucking kidding me right now, Nereid?” The menace in his words startles me, and I gasp in surprise. “Why aren’t you screaming at me?”

I shrug.

“Don’t you care I mutilated your dad?” he shouts.

My brows furrow in confusion because I don’t understand his reaction at all. “Do you want me to be angry?” I ask, needing him to clarify why he’s yelling at me.

“I don’t want it, but it’s what I fucking deserve.”

When I move my hand to his face to cup his cheek, he leans back with an aghast look on his face. “Don’t touch me.”

Shock surges through me as my hand falls to my lap, and my mouth opens and closes several times. I try to gather my thoughts, but no matter how much I try, I don’t understand why he’s pushing me away.

“I’m not doing this anymore,” I say so softly it’s almost a whisper. “We’re married now, Kai. Until death do us part, right? I’m not going to fight over something when I don’t even know what it is. If you feel you deserve my ire, well… that says more about you than me doesn’t it?”

His breath hitches, and his expression changes into his Society mask. “Nikolaos did a good job at training you,” he growls.

Even though it’s clearly not a compliment, I smile. “Thank you. Now, if you’re done using me as a verbal punching bag, I’ll be on my way.”

I jump down from the table, but Kai’s hands are on my hips before I can take a single step. He pulls me into his lap, clutching me to him. “I’m sorry, Nereid,” he murmurs against the top of my head. “You’re right. Until death do us part, and I don’t intend for that to be the death of your patience with me.”

I laugh softly. “The reason I’m not upset has nothing to do with you, Kai. It’s all my dad’s doing. He… I don’t know how I feel about him half the time, so how can I really have an opinion on what you had to do?”

I’m relieved when he nods because I don’t know how to explain it better. I already feel incredibly guilty for not immediately wanting to rush to my dad and make sure he’s okay. That part of me is dead though, and the irony of all irony is that Dad was the one who killed it. Finding out he’s been alive all these years shattered something inside me, and no amount of super glue can put it back together.

Of course, the way he’s playing games isn’t helping. If I’m completely honest with myself, I don’t trust him. Everything he has ever touched has turned to shit one way or another. That aside, he also killed the man who took his place in my life—Nikolaos. Something I’m not sure I can ever forget, let alone forgive.

I mourned my dad the first time he died, and I’m pretty sure I won’t this time.

“I understand, Nereid.” His warm breath tickles my neck, and I squirm in his lap. “Keep that up, and things will get hard,” he rasps, punctuating the words with a roll of his hips.

Unable to resist, I move again. “You know me, I’ve never been one for taking the easy way,” I quip.

Kai grabs my hips and moves me so I’m straddling him, my legs sticking out between the holes in the armrests on either side. “So you want it hard?” he growls, lust swimming in his green eyes.

Gyrating my hips, I moan when I feel the bulge growing underneath me. Biting down on my lip, I look up at him from beneath my long, dark lashes. “One could even say that’s how I prefer it.”

Kai’s hands are still on my hips, and he uses his hold to guide me back and forth in his lap, making me squirm as the tip of his cock hits my clit perfectly.

I moan his name. “Kai.”

With a growl, his lips descend on mine, his tongue sweeping inside my mouth in a thrusting motion that’s in perfect tandem with his hips. My breath hitches, and I curse myself for wearing jeans instead of a skirt or dress.

“I need you,” he grunts. “I need to be deep inside you.”

Moaning, I’m about to tell him to hurry up when the door handle moves, and before I can register what’s happening, I’m removed from my husband’s lap.
