Kai tenses so much he accidentally pushes his chair back, and his softening dick falls from my mouth. I barely manage to swallow my laughter, and my entire body vibrates with the mirth I’m holding back.

“Are you okay, Kairos?” Ana asks, sounding surprised by his abrupt movement.

He swiftly scoots the chair back, rocking it into position since he can’t very well stand up with his dick hanging out. The entire situation is so comical my eyes water with the hilarity of it all.

“Fine, Ana. I’m fine.” His voice is gruff, bordering on rude and the woman isn’t amused by that.

“Careful, Kairos. Do not take that tone with me,” she warns, disdain dripping from every word. “I’m here as a favor. One I won’t grant ever again.”

“Is that so?” Kai volleys. “You’ve never had a need to posture against me before, Ana. If I remember correctly, you’ve always been all too happy to help. So what’s eating at you?”

It sounds like Ana takes a sip of her drink before answering. “I don’t like being kept in the dark, Kai. You know that better than most.”

Kai’s hand finds my face under the table, and he gently strokes my cheek in a soothing motion. Up, down, up down—his thumb caresses my skin.

“If it helps, it’s not because I don’twantto tell you,” he sighs. “You know better than most how important my secrets are.”

“Let’s cut the bullshit, Kairos.” Ana’s voice is shrill. “Are you finally moving on from my sister? Are you serious about Acacia Drákon?”

Sister… wait… is she Nadia’ssister?

I feel rather dumb as I sit crouched under his desk, the taste of my husband’s cum coating my tongue, while he’s having a meeting with his former sister-in-law. Shit, I’m only now realizing I know next to nothing about his family, or rather, those he considers family. I always just assumed he didn’t have any, but why did I do that? Searching my memories, I try to recall a time I’ve asked him, but nothing comes to mind.

Sure, I scoured through what the Drákon Guardian could find, which wasn’t much. But after that… it just slipped my mind.

Kai growls low in his throat. “Let’s get one thing straight,” he says, tucking his soft dick back inside his pants before doing them back up. “I won’t discuss Acacia with anyone. Especially not you.”

The harshness of his tone has me wanting to preen under the table, yet I can’t. If she’s Nadia’s sister, she has a right to ask. I think. At least she does from where I’m sitting.

“Kai,” Ana sighs. “You know, I’ve told you time and time again that you need to move on. If Acacia has caught your eye, which I’m assuming she has since you’re acting like a caveman, then go for it. Nadia is gone. Dead. She’s never going to be with us again. You’re too demanding to be alone. Men like you need a woman to keep them in line, and from what I’ve seen, Acacia might have what it takes.”

Even though I’m not technically part of this conversation, I can’t resist giving my input. Since I can’t speak without giving away that I’ve been hiding down here for so long, I pinch the inside of Kai’s thigh.

“Ouch!”

I have to press my clenched fist against my mouth to muffle the laugh I’m unable to hold back.

“What?” Ana asks, baffled.

I really wish I could see Kai’s face as he rather sheepishly mutters, “Nothing. Absolutely nothing at all.”

“Whatever,” Ana says, unbothered by Kai’s outburst. “I did what you asked and looked into Marian Drákon but I couldn’t find any traces of her. The house she used to live in is empty, completely void of any personal belongings. The cars are all totaled. It is like your guard told you. She’s gone.”

“Gone?” Kai echoes, sounding like he’s questioning Ana’s sanity more than the statement. “Considering she managed to kidnap and sell the last pureblooded Drákon, I very much doubt she’s gone for good. She must be hiding somewhere.”

Right now, a feather could knock me over. The conversation is like a greatest hits of all the things I’ve let slide, too wrapped up in everything else that’s been happening. Although I’ve been preoccupied with everything else, it doesn’t feel like good enough excuses to allow Marian to become an ‘out of sight out of mind thing.’

Gods, how can I have forgotten about the bitch that’s been a thorn in my side for so many years? The fact that a lot has happened is a poor excuse for not having thought about her since… well, I don’t know if I’ve thought about her since she went missing after the Halloween party.

“I know,” Ana sighs. “I haven’t forgotten the call from you after the auction. I know what she did, and what you did.”

My mind is running a million miles per minute as I try to absorb everything they’re saying.

“What do you know about the Tribunal?” Kai asks, his hand tangles in my hair under the table as though he knows I’ve been deep in thought.

Ana gasps, making it clear that it’s a very big deal.

“It’s rumored to be the Drákon failsafe,” she says. Her voice sounds as though she’s deep in thought. “No one has ever been able to confirm or deny the existence of the Tribunal. It’s said to be made up of three, much like your own council. According to the stories, they embrace the family saying by wearing a wyvern shaped in an infinity symbol.”
