Too late, I realize my mistake. Liam takes his eyes off the guy approaching him from the front to look back at me. My mouth parts in horror as I watch the guy plummet his knife into Liam’s gut.

“No!” I scream, repeating the word over and over.

Liam staggers, falling to his knees. His head bounces off the edge of the couch, and within minutes, he’s sprawled on the floor.

“Cia!” Morgana screams. “Duck.”

I barely process her words, but still manage to do as she says. And just in time. I’m not ducking, though. I’m throwing myself across my bleeding consort.

“Agápi,” he pants my name. Sweat is coating his forehead, and I can see as well as feel the tremor running through him. “G-get out of here.”

I shake my head. “No,” I retort vehemently. “I’m not going anywhere without you.” My voice cracks as my eyes drift down to his wound.

Blood.

There’s so much blood.

Kai shouts.

Morgana screams.

Gus… why isn’t Gus making any noise?

It’s then I realize that someone has taken him to the ground. One of the intruders is sitting across his chest while trying to strangle him. My eyes flick between him and Liam, and I’m torn on what to do.

Before I can make a decision, Kai’s guards burst through the doors, finally joining us. They move like a well-oiled machine, systematically closing in on the enemies in our midst. Instead of guns, they use their hands, just like their master—our Ruler.

Now that they’ve joined, I refocus on my bleeding and trembling consort. I lean down and bite into his shirt, shredding it. Then I take the fabric and hold it firmly against his wound.

“Agápi,” he winces as he croaks my name, sounding too weak for my liking. “I love you.”

Tears distort my vision, and I shake my head. “Don’t you dare, William Drákon. You promised me. You fucking promised me to always have my back.”

Despite his weak voice and the blood pooling around us, I refuse to entertain the thought of him dying.

“You said you would follow my orders,” I hiccup. “I demand you to live through this, Liam. Do you hear me? You’re not allowed to die. And if you do, I’ll fucking find a way into Hades and pull you back.”

The corner of his lips turns upwards as though he’s trying to smile just as his eyes flutter shut.

“Liam?” I cry. When he doesn’t stir, I scream his name over and over while slapping his cheek. “No. Wake up, Liam. I haven’t told you it’s okay to sleep. I need you to be awake. Liam! Liam! Liam!”

I scream and thrash as strong arms close around my waist before hoisting me into the air. Kicking my legs and swinging my arms does nothing.

“You need to calm the fuck down,” Gus shouts. “We need to get Liam to Kai’s doctor.”

I immediately shake my head. “We’ll get Abel to look him over,” I counter stubbornly.

“Nereid!” Kai’s stern voice reaches my ears as he joins us. “We don’t have time to argue. Abel can’t help Liam. Please don’t waste your consort’s precious time by arguing.” My husband’s tone is as grave as his words.

As soon as I nod, Kai’s guards easily pick up Liam and carry him. Before following them, I bend down and retrieve the knife the now dead guy plunged into my consort’s abdomen. Rage like I’ve never felt before envelops me. While we follow the guards carrying Liam to the medical facility, I imagine the many ways I’m going to make the guy pay.
