“What is it?” I repeated.

CHAPTER 19

Zombies eat brains. You’re safe.

-Myen to Kobe

KOBE

“Umm,” Folsom hesitated. “Well…”

I got up and walked toward her and her phone, looking at the screen over her shoulder.

At first, the person in the car didn’t register to me.

It’d been such a long time since I’d been in the presence of my sister that the sight of her startled me.

She’d gotten older.

And she looked like she’d gained a little bit of weight—something that I was fairly sure would drive her nuts if I acknowledged that fact.

“Let her in,” I said without her having to ask.

I didn’t know why she was here, and I didn’t care.

What I wanted to know was how the hell she’d known to look for me here.

Angrily I stood up and walked to the door, hearing footsteps following behind as likely Folsom and her brothers headed toward the door as well.

When I got outside, it was to see Myen getting out of her car, looking for all she’s worth as if she was supposed to be there.

“Kobe!” she cried, heading straight for me.

I took a step backward when she was close enough to reach me, leaving as much separation between us as I could get.

“What are you doing here?” I asked coldly.

Myen narrowed her eyes. “Can’t a sister come see her big brother?”

“I stopped being anything to you the moment you decided to tell the police that I was purposefully there to kill that guy fake raping you,” I told her coldly.

God, even the reminder of all that I’d gone through when it came to the woman I’d once changed diapers on made me so angry I could barely see straight.

It also made me angrier that she was part of the reason that I’d missed spending the last year of my life with Folsom. Maybe if I didn’t have such a hang-up when it came to smart people, I wouldn’t have held Folsom at arm’s length.

“I’m…” Myen halted, her eyes narrowing. “Why are you acting like I have fleas or something?”

“I’m not acting like you have fleas,” I countered. “I’m treating you like I would a polite stranger that found my whereabouts without me telling her where to find me. Now, tell me how you knew where I was. Oh, and why you are here.”

“That would be me,” Sunny called. “I’m sorry. I just…”

We all looked over to see Sunny with his dog on a leash, smiling sheepishly.

I blew out a relieved breath, happy to know that people weren’t out spreading my information—or more specifically, Folsom’s—at a time like this without first thinking it through.

“Oh, good,” I said.

“As for why I’m here,” Myen said with annoyance. “I’m here because our father passed away, and I’ve been trying to reach you.”
