I stared at him for a couple seconds. “It’s fine. You can date whoever you want.”

“It was immature of me,” he said.

“Why? You’re a college guy. You’re the star of the baseball team, from what I’ve heard. You can get any girl you want.”

“But I don’t want any girl,” he said, his eyes looking me up and down. “I only wanted you, Callie.”

“What?” My heart pounded as I stared at him. I licked my lips nervously. “What are you saying, Josh?”

“I’m saying that I’d like us to go on a date.” He ran his fingers through his hair boyishly, looking nervous. “And I mean, I know we’ve gone on dates before, and it hasn’t quite worked out, and I know you might be seeing someone else, but…”

“I’m not seeing anyone,” I said faintly.

“Oh, you’re not seeing…” He paused and shook his head. “Okay. I mean, there was this guy that was here the other day and he said…”

“What guy?”

“A tall guy, dark hair, dark eyes. He looked kind of shady.”

“Oh my God,” I said out loud. “Antonio was here?”

“I don’t think his name was Antonio.” He shook his head. “That doesn’t sound familiar, but…” He shrugged. “What do I know?”

“It’s fine.” I nodded. What did it matter now? It had to have been Antonio. It must have been, but why would he have been here without me? It didn’t make sense. None of it made sense. I was a woman of logic. I was a woman that liked answers. I liked playing games. I liked doing Sudoku. I liked puzzles. I liked to know what A through Z was. I liked to know what made people do things that they did and I didn’t understand. I mean, I knew what Antonio had told me, but I didn’t even know if that was true.

“Hey, so wanna grab a pizza tonight?” Josh said, interrupting my thoughts.

I blinked at him and shook my head. “I don’t think so,” I said, smiling at him softly. I didn’t want to hurt him, but Josh and I? Well, I didn’t think we were meant to be.

“Oh, you’re not interested?” he said, looking disappointed. This was a guy that hadn’t learned to mask his feelings yet.

“I mean, our last date didn’t exactly go amazing,” I said, laughing self-consciously.

“Are you talking about when…” He frowned. “You know.”

I nodded. “You were going to go down on me, and then you fell asleep.”

“I didn’t fall asleep,” he said, making a face. “I was just nervous.”

“Nervous about what?” I said softly.

“I don’t know. I wanted to make you orgasm, and I was scared you wouldn’t.” He shrugged. “So I kind of didn’t do it. I really like you, and I wanted it to be special, and I didn’t feel like it was the right time.” He shrugged again. “I don’t know. I just don’t want you to think I’m some sort of fuck boy or something.”

“You’re not a fuck boy,” I said, laughing.

“What? Is that meant to be funny?”

“Well, you have women here all the time and…”

“I know, but that’s not what I want.” He shrugged and sighed. “But I know you’re most probably not interested in me anymore.”

“It’s not that,” I said, shaking my head. “I just have a lot going on right now. But…”

“Yeah?” he said eagerly, almost like a puppy dog.

“I don’t mind if maybe we start as friends again if you want, and then…”

“I’ll take friends,” he said. “Maybe we could be two friends that grab pizza tonight?”
