“I’m fine.”

I hung up. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Everything that could go wrong was going wrong. My phone rang one last time, and Elisabetta started laughing.

“Turns out you’re more popular than I thought, Antonio.”

I noticed that it was my dad calling, and I sighed. “What is it, Roberto?”

“Don Roberto to you.”

“Dad, what is it? I don’t have time for this shit right now.”

“I spoke to Tommasso.”

“Yeah, and?”

“You have to marry Serena.”

“I don’t have to do anything, Dad. You know I’m not marrying her.”

“She’s not the prettiest, I agree.” He snorted. “But you disrespected him.”

“So?”

“He knows all the Marchesi family secrets, Antonio. Things could go bad if you…”

“If I what?”

“If you disrespect Serena. I’ve heard that Don Gambino is interested in recruiting Tommasso. If Tommasso leaves us, there could be a huge war between the two families. We don’t need that.”

“We’d beat them, Papa.”

“Perhaps, but we’d lose a lot of men, and we don’t want to bring any more notoriety to the family right now.”

“Dad, I’m not marrying Serena because you’re worried that Tommasso is going to abdicate and join the Gambino Famiglia. If he does that, that just shows he’s a traitor anyway.”

My father sighed. “You are not listening to me!” he shouted. I could hear the anger seething in his voice. “You will marry Serena.”

“What does he have on you, Dad?” I could tell that even Alessandro was surprised at the venom in Dad’s voice.

“Where are you?” my father said.

“I’m in the car with Alessandro and Elisabetta, so maybe don’t shout because you’re on speakerphone.”

“Don’t play with me, Antonio. This is one fight you’re not going to win.”

“Bye, Papa,” I said and hung up.

“Fuck,” Alessandro said, looking surprised. “What the fuck have you done, Antonio?”

“I don’t know what the fuck is going on,” I said, shaking my head.

I was starting to feel like everything was out of control in my life. I was beginning to feel like everything was collapsing.

Elisabetta sat in the back seat, munching her pizza. She was surprisingly quiet.

“I’m surprised you don’t have anything to add,” I said softly.

Her eyes went wide, and she just shook her head. “Sometimes, I forget how volatile your family is,” she said. “Sometimes, I understand why my mom sent me away. It hurt me, but I get it.” She munched down on her pizza again. “But I’m not a weak little girl anymore. I can take my role in the Marchesi family. I want to,” she said, looking at me. “I want to help.”
