“Do you mean that?” She shifted and looked up at me. Her voice sounded awed. “Do you really mean that?”

“Of course,” I said. “I wouldn’t lie to you… again.” I paused as she laughed, the girlish sound making my heart flip suddenly. “You don’t believe me?”

“I want to believe you, but I just don’t know if I’m being too fanciful.” Her voice was wistful as she reached up and touched me on the side of the face. “I do understand why you lied to me, Antonio. I do understand why you wanted revenge on my dad. If the roles were reversed, I would have felt the same. In fact, I…” Her voice trailed off suddenly as the van spun around a corner and then suddenly stopped. Our bodies went rolling and crashed into the side of the van. Doors opened and slammed closed. We heard a few shots, and I could feel Callie burying her face into my shoulder, a whimpering sound coming from her throat. The sound turned me on even more, and I shifted my body on top of her to protect her and hold her down. “Stay there,” I whispered. “If they open the van doors and start shooting, I want to be the one that takes the bullet.”

“What?” She sounded scared. “Do you really think they’ll do that? That’s not humane… That’s cruel, and—”

“We’re Mafia, Callie. We’re cruelness incarnate.” My voice was throaty as I realized how true my words were. “We used to have a code in our world. We didn’t look at, threaten, or do anything to wives or children. But maybe we don’t care about our customs anymore. We’re in a different world now. It’s eat or be eaten. Kill or be killed. Fuck or be fucked.”

“So I guess I’m the one that got fucked.” She attempted to make a joke. “I mean, I did literally get fucked. And now I’m getting fucked in another way.”

“You do like to use the word fucked, don’t you?” I heard a loud bang and pressed my hand against her mouth. “Shh,” I whispered in her ear. “I want to see if I hear their voices. If I recognize a voice, I’ll know who organized this whole thing.” I pressed my ear against the side of the van, but it was too hard to hear anything.

“So you really think it’s this Nico guy?” she asked me softly after a few minutes, then gasped suddenly. “Did you say Nico Di Lorenzo?” The words came out in a rush, and I frowned as I crawled back toward her.

“Yes, and why?”

“Does he have a younger brother…” She sounded breathless. “I can’t remember his name, but does he have a younger brother?”

“Yes.” I was feeling tense now. “Why?”

“No reason.” She sounded dazed, and I could feel the brain cells in my head racing.

“Do you know either of them?” I asked, deceptively calm. If she knew the Di Lorenzos, then this was going to take a very interesting turn.

“No,” she said quickly. “I just heard their names recently, that’s all.”

“How did you hear about them?”

“Doesn’t matter,” she mumbled, and I frowned at her words. Who the hell had talked to her about Nico? If she thought I was a wolf and a horrible guy, she had no clue. Nico was known as the King of Sinners in our world. There was not a nice bone in his body. And yet he looked like he wouldn’t hurt a fly. And that was part of his charm.

“Was it Valentina?” Had she double-crossed me? I wouldn’t be shocked. She wasn’t loyal to anyone but herself. She was like the black widow, beautiful and deadly.

“I thought you called her Vee?” Callie sounded annoyed.

“I do, but you call her Valentina.”

“I haven’t seen her. I don’t know where she is.” Callie paused and took a deep breath. “And if I did see her, we wouldn’t be having a conversation. I’d be slapping the shit out of her.”

“That’s my girl.” I chuckled, and she made a sound.

“I’m not your girl.”

“You’re being awfully hot and cold, Callie.” I touched the side of her head and lowered my voice. “Can we please just call a truce? At least until we get out of here.”

“If we get out of here.” She sounded nervous. “I’m starting to feel hot and dehydrated, and I need water and fresh air and…” Her voice trailed off, and she sighed. “Are we going to die in here?”

“I don’t think so.” I jumped up, headed to the back of the van and started banging to see if I could figure out a way to open it. “Fuck it, why don’t they have emergency levers in these vans?”

“I’m sure they do.” Her voice was super low energy now. “But they weren’t stupid enough to leave it active in the back of the van.”

“That would have been stupid.” I made my way back to her. “I can’t get it open.”

“We’re going to run out of oxygen.” She sounded nervous. “I didn’t see this on my this is how you’re going to die list at all.”

“I’m sorry, Callie. I really didn’t want for everything to go this way.”

“I know.” She reached out and grabbed my hand. “I’m sure it’s not what you would have wanted at all.”
