He sighed. “It wasn’t about the cologne, not everything,” he said. “It was a test, yes, but what we had, it was special.”

“So what about at the haunted house? Did you have the cologne on then?” I said low.

“What haunted house?” my father asked. “What are you talking about?”

I stared at my parents and shook my head. “Trust me, Mom and Dad. You don’t want to know.”

“What’s she talking about?” my father asked my mother.

“I don’t know. Polly, Chelsea, what’s she talking about?”

I looked over at Chelsea and Polly, and they were both tightlipped. Molly stared at me, and I could see her grinning from ear to ear.

My dad walked over to Finn. “What’s she talking about? What haunted house? What test did you do at the haunted house?”

“There was no test at the haunted house, sir. That was private and personal matter between Harriet and me.”

“But you don’t like scary things,” my father said. “You won’t even go to the corn maze.”

“Yeah, Dad. Well, I guess your cologne made me do things I wouldn’t normally do,” I said. “Like getting a job for a billionaire as a housekeeper when I can’t cook and I can’t clean. And—”

Finn grabbed my hand. “I don’t think you need to go into any more detail. Can we talk?”

“What more talking do you want to do?” I said, shaking my head. “I’m done with you, Finn.”

He sighed. “So when you say you’re done with me, does that mean on a personal level or does that also mean—”

“I quit. I don’t need to be your housekeeper anymore. Didn’t you just hear? My family came into a lot of money. I don’t need to be your servant.”

“Really?” he said. “What about if you’re just my submissive?”

“What?” My jaw dropped.

Finn realized he’d said that out loud, and everyone was gawking at us. He started laughing then. “I’m sorry. It was just a joke between Harriet and me.”

“Uh-huh. You want to know what the joke was about, Mom and Dad? He’s referencingFifty Shades of Gray. You know the erotic novel that Mom read a couple of years ago and you guys got it on?”

My dad looked slightly embarrassed, and my mom blushed. “Well, that was a very educational book, my dear.” She looked at me, and then she looked at Finn. “Well, we’re all adults here. Let me go and make some tea. Come on, darling. Help me in the kitchen.”

“Yes, darling,” he said. My mom and dad hurried away.

“I cannot believe you said that,” I told Finn, shaking my head.

“Why? Would you rather me grab you and put you over my lap and start spanking you in front of them?”

“Ithink I want to go home,” I said as we stood there.

“Okay, got it. I can drive you home.”

I realized then my mistake. I called his house my home, but it wasn’t, not really. I was homeless. I had nowhere to go. I was a soul without a resting place.
