“Yeah. The fellowship. And I think you’re going to get it. You’re so talented, Harriet.”

“Thanks, girl. I really hope I get it.”

“But,” Polly interjected, “part of the fellowship is that she would have to teach students in elementary school art projects, and she has to do it every Friday.”

I licked my lips nervously. “And there’s nothing wrong with that. I love kids, and I love teaching, and—”

“No, you don’t,” Chelsea said. “You hate kids.”

“I love kids when they’re quiet and pay attention.”

“And which kids are quiet and pay attention?” Polly said. “And anyway, that’s not even the part I was worried about.”

“What’s the part you were worried about?” Chelsea asked.

“Um, the fact that she wouldn’t be able to work on Fridays. How do you start a new job as a housekeeper and say, ‘Hey, by the way, I don’t work Fridays’?”

“I know how you say it,” Chelsea said. “‘Hi, excuse me, Mr. Hot Wall Street Broker Man—’”

“His name is Finn, guys.”

“Okay,” Chelsea said. “‘Excuse me, Finn. Just so you know, I don’t work Fridays.’”

“There’s no way I can say that. Plus, if he’s gone as much as I think he’s going to be gone, he won’t even know.”

“But didn’t part of the fellowship application say that you had to sometimes find places to teach the students?” Polly said.

“Polly, did you apply for the fellowship too and not tell me?”

“No, but I did help you fill out the application, and I read it over several times to make sure you weren’t missing anything.”

“Well, thank you for being so diligent, Polly, but…”

“But what?” she said.

“But nothing. I haven’t gotten the fellowship yet, so it doesn’t even matter. I don’t know if I can work Fridays or not. If I get it, then I’ll figure something out.”

“Okay,” she said. “So how’s the place, really cool?”

“It’s amazing. Shall I FaceTime you? I’m going to show you my bedroom, or should I say my palatial suite?” I switched my phone to FaceTime and saw my two sisters, who looked so similar to me. “Okay, guys, I’m going to switch the camera around,” I said quickly and showed them the room. I grinned as they oohed and ahhed.

“Maybe I want to be a maid as well,” Chelsea said, and I switched the phone over and glared at her.

“I’m not a maid. I’m a housekeeper. There’s a difference.”

“What’s the difference, girl? You’re going to be cleaning.”

“No, I’m not. Didn’t I tell you my brilliant idea?” I asked.

“No, what?” Polly said, her eyes narrowing.

“Actually,” I said as I looked around the room, “let me not say anything just now. I don’t know if there are cameras or microphones in here. I don’t want to—”

“If there are cameras or microphones in there, then Finn already knows that you can’t work on Fridays,” Polly said.

“Well, no, because I don’t have the fellowship yet. So if I get the fellowship, I’ll work something out,” I looked around the room and raised my voice, “because this is the job of my dreams, and I would never do anything to compromise that.” I stared at the phone. Both Chelsea and Polly were looking at me like I was crazy. “Anyway, girls, gotta go. Speak to you later.”
