“Yes, well,” I said as he sat down, “I had an idea.”

“Oh?” He looked up at me. “And what was that?”

“Well, back when I was in culinary school in Paris…”

“Uh-huh,” he said.

“We had this thing that we did.”

“Okay. What was that thing? Cooking?” he asked me, chuckling.

“Very funny, Finn. Well, of course, we were cooking, but we used to do these blind taste tests where we would blindfold the person that was going to eat, and then they would eat our dishes and have to say how much they liked it without actually seeing it. It was part of the gastronomic experience,” I said, not even sure if I used the word correctly.

“Really, you did that in culinary school.” He raised a single eyebrow. “Isn’t part of the joy of eating seeing what’s on the plate?”

“Well, I went to this really special school that said that people who are blind should be able to experience and enjoy food the same way.”

“Okay. So you’re saying you want to blindfold me is what I’m hearing.”

“Well, yes,” I said, walking over to him and tilting my head to the side, my fingers playing with my hair. If I was going to have to flirt to get him to do what I wanted, then I was going to have to flirt. I needed this paycheck, a place to stay, and I certainly did not want my experience with the best bed in my life to have only been for one night.

“So is this just about food, or is there something else you’re trying to do to me while I’m blindfolded?” he said.

My heart raced as I surveyed his face. “What do you mean by that?”

“I don’t know. Is there going to be a little surprise at the end of the meal?”

“You’re funny,” I said, touching his shoulder. “What sort of surprise would sir like?” I couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of my mouth. I felt like I was in a porno movie and pretending to be a maid. Well, I was pretending to be one, but I wasn’t in a real porno. At least, I hoped I wasn’t going to be in one. That was the last thing I needed.

“I don’t know. I guess let’s just see where this breakfast takes us,” he said, winking. “So what are you going to blindfold me with?”

“Let me go and get something,” I said quickly.

“You can use this,” he said, and my jaw dropped as he pulled his shirt off. “That way you don’t have to exert too much energy running around the house.”

“Okay,” I said, licking my lips and staring at his bare chest again. Man, he was hot. I placed his shirt around his head and covered his eyes. “You can’t see, right?”

“Not a dicky bird,” he said.

“Okay, good. I’ll be right back.” I hurried to the kitchen, my heart racing. I couldn’t believe that I’d gotten him to agree to wear a blindfold so easily. Maybe, just maybe, his bad attitude in the coffee shop had been a one-off. Maybe he’d been having a bad day like I was. Maybe everything was going to work out after all.

I opened the Egg McMuffin wrapper, placed it on a plate, and grabbed the hash brown. I pulled out the packets, squeezed them into a bowl, and mixed them together. It looked disgusting, but he wasn’t going to see it. Maybe it would taste better than it looked. I poured it over the Egg McMuffin and then stared at the plate. It looks like absolute shit. “But you don’t have to worry about that,” I whispered to myself. “He’s not going to see.” I took a deep breath and made my way back to the dining room. This was it. “Ismonsieurready for your special breakfast?”

“I’m starving. I have been craving eggs Benedict all week.”

“Oh,” I said, my voice squeaking. “So there’s just one thing you should know.”

“Yes, Harriet?”

“I think I told you I’m very close with my family, and we often make special meals, and we have a breakfast that we always make instead of eggs Benedict. It’s very similar, but it’s our own special twist, and we call it Eggs a la Campbell.”

“Wow,” he said, “I am lucky. Today I have Eggs a la Campbell and Campbell potatoes. You’re really knocking it out of the park, aren’t you, Harriet? I’m very thankful that I hired you.”

I stared at his blindfolded face. Was this man being serious, or was he pulling my leg? I wasn’t sure, but I wasn’t going to question him.

“So I’m going to bring your plate over to you now, and let me know if you’d like me to help feed you.”

“I think so,” he said, “seeing as I can’t see where the plate is or the food or…”
