“Anyway,” I said, cutting him off. “So, this was all a big joke to you?”

“I wouldn’t say it was a joke, but I am a professor and…”

“You’re what?” I bit down on my lower lip. “What do you mean, you’re a professor?”

“My name is Dr. Finn Joseph, and I am a professor of psychology. I was testing to see how much of an arrogant jerk a rich man could be before a young, impressionable female would walk away from him.”

I pressed my lips together. “Oh, and I suppose I was the young, impressionable female?”

“Yes,” he said. “You were the perfect case study.”

“Okay, but you didn’t know I was going to apply for this job.”

“I didn’t,” he said, shaking his head. “That was a happy coincidence. I was going to test my hypothesis on another young female who applied for the job. But when you walked in, I thought it was even better.”

“Wow. So I walked right into your trap.”

“I wouldn’t say you walked into my trap per se.” He shrugged.

“But I thought you were a billionaire businessman and…” I shook my head. “I read about you online. The website said you were the fifth richest man in the world and…”

“I have friends in IT. They created a website. I’m sure you just clicked on the first link that came up when you put in my name.”

I stared at him for a few seconds, my heart racing. He was correct, of course. I put in Finn Joseph, and the website popped up with articles. I haven’t checked any of them. I could feel my heart sinking.

“So you’re not a billionaire?”

“No.” He shook his head. “Millionaire, yes, but not because I’m so great at business or on Wall Street. I have a very rich grandfather that left me a couple of businesses, and I do manage them, but I’m also a professor.”

“But when you were on that phone in a coffee shop, you were going on about your summer house and…”

“And this is my summer house.”

“But the business deals and…”

“Yes. My family members suggested I take some time away because I have been so inundated with running the businesses and my job at the university.”

“But you were such a jerk to me.”

“I apologize for that. I was distracted, and I did want to see how you would react.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you were quite fun to flirt and banter with.”

“You thought it was fun to get me fired?”

“I think you deserved to be fired. You can’t serve shitty coffee like that and expect to keep your job.”

“So you’re firing me now then, huh? Again?”

“Actually, no.” He shook his head. “I’m not going to fire you again.”

“But you know I lied.”

“I know you can’t cook for shit.” He nodded. “I know that you are most probably not a very good housekeeper, but I’m going to give you another chance.”

“You are?” I said, surprised. “But why?”
