“You need the job, right?”

“I do.”

“And you need money, right?”

“I do.”

“And you want to be close to me, right?”

“I don’t know about that,” I said, shaking my head, laughing slightly.

“Okay, well, then you don’t want to be close to me and you don’t want me to kiss you or touch you or make love to you or do any of the things that you’ve been thinking about.”

“I have not been thinking about any of those things,” I said quickly.

“Liar.” He laughed. “If you want, I can just give you a couple of grand and you can leave and this can all be done.”

I stared at him for a couple of seconds. “Okay?”

His eyes narrowed. “Is that okay? You want the money or…”

“No, I don’t want your money,” I said, shaking my head. “I wouldn’t take your money for something I haven’t done. I don’t need your pity.”

“Okay, so then what do you want?”

“I don’t know, but we need to figure out how to make this work for both of us. I don’t want to be your sex plaything or whatever.”

“So then, what do you want to be?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “This whole thing has been weird. You played me.”

“But you played me first.”

“I lied because I needed a job because you’d been a jackass to me in the coffee shop. You lied because you were doing a study and you wanted to see how far you could take things. What were you going to do next?”

“Do you really want to know?” he asked softly.

I nodded. “I do.”

“Are you sure?” he said.

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

“I was going to take you to the fair tomorrow evening.”

“And?”

“Well, I don’t know that I want to tell you what was going to happen just yet.”

“Okay.”

“I can show you, though.”

“And then what?”

“And then you decide if you want to stay in my employ.”

“Okay, so we go to the fair tomorrow and then I see if I want to stay with you?”
