“Fine,” she said, “build your pillow fort.” She watched as Brooks stood from the bed and grabbed the half dozen or so pillows that had adorned the top of the bed when it was fully made. Honestly, she had no idea why some people liked to cover their beds with so many pillows. When she was ready for bed, she wanted to pull down the covers and just go to sleep. But tonight, she was glad that someone liked the frilly pillows that took up most of the bed because Brooks was using them to build her a pillow fort so that they could both go to sleep.

He finished and looked over at her as if silently asking her if she was good with his newly built fort. “It looks great,” she assessed.

“Good, now get your ass in bed and go to sleep,” he grumbled, hopping back into his side of the bed.

“Thank you, Brooks,” she said, gently sliding into her side of the bed. “And thanks for being so kind, even if you had an ulterior motive.”

He yawned and turned over, giving her his back. “No problem, now be quiet so I can sleep.”

Savannah giggled and closed her eyes. “Night, Brooks,” she whispered.

“Night,” he murmured. Savannah rolled over and smiled to herself. For the first time all day, she was sure that this summer was going to be one to remember—for better or worse.

* * *

Savannah woke up early the next morning tangled up with Brooks. For a second, she couldn’t remember where she was or who she was in bed with—something that really never happened to her. But then she remembered Brooks putting up the safety barrier of the pillows that were somehow missing, with her face pressed up against his chest and her arms practically wrapped around him.

“Morning,” he whispered. And shit—he was awake.

“Um, good morning,” she said, trying to extricate herself from him. “What happened to the pillows?” she asked.

“You sleepwalk,” he said, “and, in the middle of the night, you woke up and tossed all of the pillows onto the floor.” That couldn’t be right, could it? She had never slept walked in her life. At least, no one ever told her that she did.

“That’s just not possible,” she insisted.

“I thought that you’d say that, and I also knew that waking someone who was sleepwalking was a bad idea, so I grabbed my phone and made a video of you instead,” he admitted.

“Great, you got me on video sleepwalking?” she asked. “Let’s see it and please tell me that you haven’t posted it on social media anywhere.”

“I’d never do something like that, Savannah. At least, not without your permission,” Brooks assured. He handed her his cell phone. “Just hit play,” he instructed.

“I know how videos on cell phones work, Brooks,” she grumbled.

“Geeze, you’re not a morning person, are you?” he asked.

“I’m not and waking up to be told that I sleepwalk has only compounded my bad mood,” she said.

“Good to know,” he said. “Just watch the video.” She pushed play on the phone screen and watched herself stand from the bed and begin to slowly remove the pillow that served as a barrier between the two of them. Savannah didn’t remember doing any of it and that was the part that scared her.

“I don’t remember doing that,” she admitted.

“I guess that’s why it’s called sleepwalking,” he said. “You must have subconsciously hated the wall of pillows between us.”

“That’s just not true,” she insisted. “I was the one who was nervous about sharing the bed with you. Why would I want to remove the barrier between us?” she asked.

Brooks shrugged, “I have no idea, but the proof is right there. You took the pillows down and tossed them to the floor.” Savannah looked over her side of the bed to find all the frilly pillows strewn all over the floor.

“I guess I did,” she mumbled. “What the hell?”

“You’re a cuddler too,” he said. “When you were finished taking down the pillow wall, you crawled back into bed, and practically knocked me back down to the mattress. Then, you laid on top of me and cuddled into my body, falling right back to sleep. Honestly, I think that you just wanted to cuddle with me, Savannah.” Double shit—what the hell was going on with her? Was Brooks right and she was doing this stuff subconsciously because she wanted to be close to him?

“I have no idea why I did any of that, Brooks,” she admitted. “I’m so sorry.”

“I didn’t mind,” he said. “Besides, I’m pretty irresistible.”

She handed him back his phone and got out of bed. “On that note, I think I’ll go find some coffee.”

“Wait,” he ordered, “I’m coming with you. I could use some since you had me up most of the night.”
