“Well, you finally gave up whispering in the hallway and decided to bring you guy in to meet me,” her father chided.

Savannah rolled her eyes at her father. “He’s not my guy,” she said. Sure, that should have hurt his feelings, but it didn’t. He wouldn’t let Savannah push him out of her life again, no matter how many hateful things she said to try to do just that.

“I am her guy, and it’s great to meet you, Mr. Higgins,” he said, holding out his hand to her father.

“I like you, Brooks,” he said, “call me David.”

“Thank you, David,” Brooks said.

“You drove all the way home today just to check in on Savannah and me?” he asked.

“Yep, and I had the pleasure of meeting your nurse, Lorna,” he said, giving her father a wink.

“Dear Lord,” she grumbled. “You’re laying on the charm a bit thick, aren’t you, Brooks?” she asked.

“Not at all,” he said, “I’m hoping to impress your father, so he’ll agree to what I’m about to ask him.”

“What are you about to ask me?” David asked.

“Yeah, what are you about to ask my father, Brooks?” Savannah asked, staring him down.

“Well, I came here today to tell you that I’m in love with you, Savannah. I have been since the first day I met you. I’ve never met anyone as stubborn and bull-headed as you are.”

“Charming,” she mumbled, “you do know that those are not compliments, right?” she asked.

“To me they are,” Brooks countered. “Did you catch the part where I said that I’m in love with you?” he asked.

“I did, but we’ve only been together for a month. How can you be sure that you love me?” she asked.

Her father sighed, “Not this again,” he breathed. “She said the same thing about Lorna and me. Told me I couldn’t be in love after only a month, but when you know, you know.”

Brooks nodded, “I guess I can’t be sure. I just feel it in my gut,” Brooks said. “I love you and I want you to move in with me so that we can spend the rest of our lives together.”

“Spend the rest of our lives together?” Savannah squeaked.

“Yep, and that’s the question I have for your father. I’d like to marry your daughter, sir,” he said. “And I’d like to have your permission to do so. But I have to warn you, I’d marry her without it too. I love Savannah and I won’t give her up without a fight.”

“Well, son,” her father said, “my fighting days are over. And honestly, my permission is no good without my daughter’s consent. You should ask her if she wants to marry you, Brooks.”

He turned to face her and noted the tears freely falling from her beautiful blue eyes. That was a good sign, right? “How about it, honey?” he asked. “Will you marry me?”

“You know that I’m a sucker for you calling me, ‘Honey,’ right?” she asked.

“Yeah, I kind of remember that,” he teased.

“And I do love you, Brooks,” she whispered. “I know that it’s only been a month, but like my father said, ‘When you know, you know.’”

“So, are you going to marry the boy or not?” her father asked.

“I think that I’d like to marry him, Dad. What do you think?” she asked her father. Brooks stood between the two of them, trying to patiently wait them out.

“I think you should do what your heart tells you to do. Does he make you happy?” her father asked.

Savannah looked Brooks over as if trying to decide if he made her happy or not, and smiled back at her father, nodding her answer. “He does,” she admitted.

“Then, I believe that you have your answer,” her father said.

“I do,” she agreed. She looked back at Brooks and took his hand into her own. “I’d love to marry you, Brooks,” she agreed. “Under one condition.”
