He grasped the tops of her arms and pulled her to her feet before standing and proceeding to straighten and refasten Evie’s clothes. “This should not have happened again. I have never behaved with a woman as I do with you. Never been so depraved in my sexual demands as I am with you.” He stepped back from the temptation of her.

Evie stumbled slightly, then regained her balance. “I do not understand. Did I do something wrong? I thought you wanted me to—to—”

“Want you?” he repeated harshly. “Did you not hear me say you drive me insane with lust? To a degree I demand and take from you in ways I never have before.”

“With other women, you mean.” Evie’s displeasure could be heard in her voice.

Unlike Evie, Hunter could not claim to be a virgin. How could he when he was a man of three and thirty and had been sexually active for sixteen of those years. Usually with ladies of the demimonde, but occasionally with an attractive widow who had no more interest in remarrying than he did in marrying her.

They had been physically satisfying and emotionally sterile encounters, with no upset feelings on either side when they were over.

Absolutely nothing like the way he felt about Evie. “I have never behaved with such a total lack of control with a woman before,” he muttered self-disgustedly. “And there are still things I know I wish to do to you and have you do to me, depraved and debauched things I never even thought of doing until I met you.”

She blinked. “What sort of things?”

He glared. “I want to take you in every way possible. Your beautiful mouth, your delicious pussy, your bottom.” He closed his eyes. “Even the thought of sinking my cock between those luscious cheeks, red and hot after I have spanked them, pushing through the muscles of your rosette, having my cockinside youthere, has made me hard again.” His hand moved briefly to cup his long and engorged cock, now visibly pressing against the front of his pantaloons.

“I do not see any of that as being wrong if it is what we both want,” Evie murmured huskily.

“But I want more than that. Things I could never have imagined…”

“Tell me.”

His hands clenched at his sides. “I want to fuck your mouth again, have your squeeze my balls at the same time as you push one of your fingers into my arse. I want to feel as completely taken by you as you will be by me.”

Her cheeks blushed a fiery red. “I am willing to do anything that will give you pleasure.”

“No!” Hunter’s thoughts were dark and tortured with those images as he looked at her again. “It is as well we shall reach London tomorrow and I can see about putting an end to this torment.”

“How?”

He could feel a nerve pulsing in the tightness of his jaw. “By ridding myself of this intolerable guardianship.”

Hunter had thought about what should be done as he spent hours alone on horseback these past two days with nothing to do but think. The only way forward he could see was to divest himself of Evie’s guardianship as soon as he was able.

Evie swallowed hard, the last of her euphoria having faded and been replaced by the stark reality of Hunter’s rejection of not just their lovemaking, but also of her.

Because it hadn’t been lovemaking to him. Depraved and debauched, he had called it, and Evie had no other experience to compare it with to know if that was true.

Perhaps it was both those things?

But just because Evie knew herself to be in love with Hunter didn’t mean he was even close to feeling the same way about her.

No matter how much Hunter believed himself above such things, he was still only a man. One, moreover, presented with a young woman who made it clear she was more than willing to welcome and indulge in any and all of his sexual fantasies. Even those he admitted he had never thought of doing with another woman.

She was a fool if she thought Hunter would ever see her as anything more than her mother’s daughter. The woman who had, for so many years, been his father’s mistress. No matter that the two of them had loved each other, that if the duke had been free, they might even have married each other, despite their social differences.

Would Evie still have fallen in love with Hunter then, the haughtily distant man who had become her much older stepbrother?

They would never know, because it hadn’t happened.

What had happened was that Hunter, despite thelusthe admitted feeling for her, was making it clear he no long wished to be her loverorher guardian.

Evie straightened, her chin held high. “As far as I am concerned, that cannot happen soon enough.”

He nodded tersely. “Then we are in agreement.”
