“I’m not sure nice is the right way of describing him, but he’s honest and totally loyal to our family,” he conceded. “He’s also back to being his usual annoying self after being uncharacteristically quiet since breaking up with his boyfriend,” he added ruefully.

“Casper is gay?” she prompted curiously.

“Bi,” Darius dismissed. “A lot of the people he becomes involved with don’t like that. They accuse him of wanting cakeanddessert. It can make for short and rocky relationships.”

“That seems unfair.” Mia frowned. “Odds are that once he meets his person, he won’t ever look at anyone else again, male or female.”

He glanced sideways at her. “You still believe everyone has a single person who is exactly right for them?” He couldn’t completely keep the incredulity out of his voice.

“Because I grew up without a family, you mean? Yes, I believe that,” she confirmed. “The divorce rate would indicate they don’t always meet each other, but I do believe there is someone special out there for everyone.”

“Their person.” Darius tried to infuse scorn into his tone, but knew that he’d failed. Probably because, much as he wanted to deny it, he knew Mia was his person.

Was he her person too?

He might have chosen to ignore it, but he hadn’t missed the way her cheeks had flushed and desire flared in her eyes the day they’d met—was it really only yesterday? So much seemed to have happened since then—in the elevator.

Or felt the heat of her gaze on him several times since.

Or the way his own heart had leaped earlier when she’d looked at him with such trust in those beautiful green-and-turquoise eyes.

If he was her person, would him denying their connection mean that Mia was doomed to live the rest of her life without knowing what true love was from the one person meant to be hers?

Or would she meet some other man, who might not match her quite so well as her person, but who succeeded in making her happy anyway?

The thought of that made Darius’s gut churn. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly, the leather audibly creaked.

Which was an unfair reaction on his part, when Mia’s life had already been so emotionally barren, it was surprising that she believed in love at all.

“Don’t give my childish fantasies another thought.” Mia gave his forearm a reassuring squeeze.

Instantly making Darius want to know what each and every one of those fantasies were, especially the sexual ones, so that he could make them all come true.

“In a few days, I’ll be out of your hair, and we’ll probably never meet again,” Mia added.

And wasn’t that just a fucking awful future to contemplate!

“Oh good, we’re here,” Mia realized when Darius parked the vehicle at the end of the driveway of the house his sat-nav told him was their destination. “Are you coming in, or would you prefer to stay out here?”

It was an old house, not in very good repair, and in a not particularly safe area of London. “I’m coming in,” he stated grimly as he switched off the ignition.

“I doubt my housemates represent a threat to me,” she mocked.

Darius was more interested in seeing exactly what Mia’s living conditions were than feeling concerned about her housemates. “Don’t get out of the vehicle until I’ve come round and opened your door.”

“I doubt there are going to be assassins lurking behind every overgrown bush in our garden either.”

“You’ll wait, nevertheless.”

Her brows rose at his arrogance. “You really need to work on your social skills.”

“My being polite isn’t what’s going to keep you alive. Fuck,” he bit out forcefully when Mia gasped. “Jesus! I’m sorry.” He reached out to grip the tops of her arms. “Mia, talk to me, damn it!” He lifted her over the central console so that she was sitting sideways on his thighs, one of his arms about her waist keeping her in place.

“Whoa, you’re incredibly strong,” she admired as she settled herself more comfortably.

He was also incredibly stupid, Darius acknowledged self-disgustedly when Mia settled her bottom directly over his crotch and his cock immediately began to engorge.

Mia’s eyes widened as she obviously felt that telling hardness. “Darius…?”
