“I do, yes.”

“You must live a very boring life.”

He smiled. “I assure you, my Daisy and children ensure I live a very full life.”

“Then you’ll appreciate that there’s nothing exciting about my own life.”

“That depends…”

Her brows rose. “On what?”

The Russian’s brow creased into a frown as he studied her. “Why did you dye your hair black?” He lifted a stray black hair off her shoulder.

Mia stepped away from him. “It was purple last month, green the one before that. I don’t use a permanent dye, so it will wash out in a couple of weeks. And I choose to dye my hair because the original strawberry-blonde color is just a fancy way of saying it’s not blonde at all, but a wishy-washy and uninteresting ginger.”

“Purple must have looked atrocious with your coloring. Black does nothing to complement your freckles or the unusual color of your eyes either.” He pushed his hands into his trouser pockets, hopefully to stop himself from touching her again. Mia didn’t like to be touched, especially by people she didn’t know.

She eyed him impatiently. “Well, thanks for that.”

“I am not trying to insult you—”

“That’s probably because you’re succeeding!” She frowned her exasperation with this conversation.

He continued to study her. “Would it surprise you to know that during my investigations, I learned more about you than I was expecting?”

“I have nothing to hide,” she snapped.

The Russian’s smile was more a baring of white and perfectly straight teeth. “I like you, Miss Smith. You havekhrabrost.”

“Thank you. I think,” she added ruefully.

“In my language, it means bravery and courage.”

“You—”

“What the fuck—! Mia, go and put some damned clothes on,” Darius instructed as he strode across the room toward her, his expression thunderous.

Her eyes widened. “I don’t have any other clothes,” she reminded.

She might not be wearing anything beneath the T-shirt, but again, it was so large on her, it only skimmed across her bare breasts and reached almost to her knees.

She was also more than a little hurt that these words of admonishment were the first Darius had spoken to her after they had spent the night together and the intimacies they had shared.

“Besides,” she taunted, “I remember that last night, you told me you prefer me naked.”

He continued to glare his disapproval once he stood in front of her. “You’ll find some of my sweats in one of the drawers in my bedroom.”

Tears of humiliation stung Mia’s eyes, not just because of Darius’s attitude, but because all the other men in the room had now stopped talking and were watching the two of them and listening to their conversation.

Theirconversation?

It wasn’t so much a conversation as Darius throwing his arrogant weight around and embarrassing her in the process.

Totally at odds with the way Mia had hoped the two of them would spend the day together.

It was too much when she already felt overwhelmed by the presence of all the Kingston men in the room and then this conversation with the even more disturbing Nikolai Volkov.
