But right now, I was feeling pretty damn bear.

Staying with Hugo might be good. Even though I’d been working with wolves, I hadn’t taken the time to make friends with the local packs yet.

I wanted to shift.

So many things were going through my head, and this was not the time to feel all these feelings. I couldn’t screw up this date. My bear wanted Marissa, but my human side wondered if I was being an idiot. I’d never see eye to eye with her family, and it would take a lot of work for us to forgive each other.

Could I really trust her? I was about to find out.

Her eyes were sparkling, and her lips curled up into a smile as she approached. “I’m surprised you’re actually gonna take me on a date after what happened backstage.”

“Can’t get rid of me that easily.”

“It’s kinda early for a date,” she said.

I raised a brow. “Got somewhere else to be?”

She shook her head. “Nope. Tonight, I’m yours, bear.”

Yes.My animal liked that a lot. “I could get used to that.”

“All Stephanie would tell me was to dress casual and warm, but she wouldn’t give me any hints about where we might be going.”

I nodded to Stephanie in appreciation. “You’re not very good with surprises.”

“I keep telling myself this experience will make me better at my job because now I know how frustrating it is to be kept in the dark.” She shook her head.

“Is that the only reason you’re doing this? Because it will make you better at your job?”

“Oh, you’re impossible.” She threw up her hands and laughed.

“I’m impossible?”

“You haven’t seen anything yet.” Her gaze locked on mine, challenging me. That look was dangerously close to what she’d given me the night of the mating ceremony. “Give me a hint, at least.”

My bear was begging me to kiss her because he liked what happened after that. Although the track record had been tarnished by that lawsuit. “You good with heights?”

Her eyebrows went up, but she quickly steeled herself. “Show me what you’ve got.”

“Oh, I plan to.” My bear rumbled in confirmation, but I still had to wonder if I was making a mistake going through with this. Did it matter if she was my mate if she’d ruined my life?

Give her a chance, my beast urged.Let her surprise you.

With that, we headed to the van. Hugo followed behind us in his truck.

Bibi looked at us in the rearview mirror. “Can you guess what I’m going to ask?”

“How are you feeling?” we said in unison and laughed. It was perfect because the tension was getting thick.

“Call me predictable, but you know what an important question it is. Especially on this episode.”

I looked at Marissa, who took a deep inhale, daring me to answer the question.

I worried if I opened my mouth, words would betray me because my bear was all in.

“It kinda feels like I’m a teenager dating the bad boy my mom doesn’t approve of.” Marissa laughed. “I can’t believe how nervous I am.”

“The two of you haven’t had a chance to talk about the lawsuit since the papers were delivered,” Stephanie said.
