“Ask away. I’m an open book.”

She gave me an oily grin. “Not now. On stage.”

ChapterTwenty-Two

Marissa

I woke up swaddled in the warmest, fuzziest blanket. My body ached, but it was a good ache. I blinked several times, trying to remember where I was.

Right, the den.

Bjorn was a bear, and I wasn’t sure if I was awake or dreaming that I was in my personal snow globe with my very own polar bear.

I wasn’t scared anymore, so that had to be a good thing.

Bjorn rumbled. I liked to think I was starting to be able to understand him like this. I crawled over him to peek outside. The light was that grainy gray-blue of the first early morning light in the winter.

His big paw caught me and dragged me back.

“I just wanted to see what time it was.” It was on the tip of my tongue to say that I knew he could understand me when he was in his bear form, but I stopped.

Memories flashed in my mind. The two of us naked. His hands all over me. The two of us fighting...what else was new. Him carrying me down the road.

And the best sex of my life. The muscles between my legs pulsed in response.

No, none of that could have happened. I was still dressed, Bjorn was still a bear, and we were still here. I must have dreamed the whole thing. But those muscles were pretty sore, and there was only one thing that could make them feel like that.

Bjorn rumbled.

“It’s daylight. We should try to get back to the road,” I said. “Bibi’s gotta be worried sick. I’m sure Hugo is too.” I dug into my pocket and gasped. “Where’s my phone?”

Bjorn’s body vibrated, and I pulled away from him. Instinctively I knew he would shift. Instead, he rumbled out of the den.

Once I found the phone, I scrambled to follow him. Every single muscle screamed at me. My head was pounding, and my mouth tasted like it was full of sand. But weirdly, I also felt amazing.

Forget the Hudaknocker. This bear had me under some powerful spell.

His transformation had begun, and this time, it didn’t scare me. The fur dissolved like it became part of the snow, and his body rearranged itself into its human form, giving me a front-row seat to that glorious ass.

Sweet moon, he was gorgeous. I’d always known he was beautiful, but something about Bjorn standing naked in the snow in the early morning light, with his hair cascading down his back as he tipped his face up to the sky, was absolutely glorious.

Thankfully, I was far enough away from him that he wouldn’t hear the breath catch in my throat.

He turned and grinned at me. Damn it, the bear didn’t miss a beat.

“Good morning,” he said. “You scared the shit out of me last night.”

“I scared the shit out of you? I’m pretty sure it was the other way around.”

He stifled a chuckle. “Let’s compare notes.”

“Absolutely. You shifted into a bear and brought me to a den in the middle of nowhere for a sleepover.”

“You got real close to hypothermia.”

I gasped, and he nodded. No wonder I’d had crazy dreams. But the reality of what could have happened would probably hit me later when I least expected it. If Bjorn was right, I could have died last night.

Bear one, Marissa zero.
