“I know you have.” He’d moved slightly closer. All wolf, all the time. I couldn’t say I didn’t enjoy it.
But it made me uneasy in a way I couldn’t explain. “Do you have any idea how long Lars will be in beast mode? We could certainly use him on Marissa and Bjorn’s episode. I have complete confidence in putting Tina and Stephanie in their positions, but it would be nice to have our full security team on board while everyone gets acquainted with the show.”
“He’ll stay in his natural form until after the last frost. And he’s still a valuable part of the team, dealing with the mountain business we won’t be able to address in deep snow.”
“I love that you have everything covered.” I squeezed his hand. “Tell me. What do you think he is?”
“We’re talking about work again.”
The waiter appeared at the perfect time. I ordered the swordfish, and Hugo got the rib eye.
“What do you think of the music?” he asked once we were alone again.
“It’s so nice. I’ve seen this dinner club advertised and thought it would be fun to experience it.” There were a lot of familiar faces here. Love was definitely in the air lately, or maybe I was more in tune with it since becoming the host ofThe Mating Game. “It feels so next level.”
“Yeah, that’s exactly what I was hoping for.” Hugo’s smile was a little lopsided. I loved that about him. He never apologized for his imperfections. “Is there anywhere else in town you’ve been thinking of checking out? Doesn’t have to be in Sunset Springs. I’m sure you see all the date spots on the show—”
“Which we are not talking about,” I interjected.
That made him laugh. “Not tonight. If you had a chance to get away, where would you like to go?”
“Wendy and Gabe are on their mate moon in Hawaii, and I would love to go there. I tried to talk them into letting me go with them to film, but they said no to the third wheel. Maybe we could do a spinoff.The Mating Gamein Paradise.”
Hugo raised a brow. “Sounds like you’re talking about work.”
“Of course I am. I love my job. And wouldn’t you love going on an all-expenses paid trip to somewhere hot and tropical?”
“Do I get to go with you?” That delicious rumble was back.
“Of course you do. You’re the head of security.”
He leaned closer. “How secluded is this island?”
I pushed his solid arm. “Hugo, you are so fresh! Too bad we only have a few days before Marissa and Bjorn’s episode starts. Maybe we could do a quick little getaway to Vegas for the weekend. Oh, that would be so decadent. We could get a gorgeous suite overlooking the heart of the Strip, go to a couple of shows, book a couples massage, and the food. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.”
Hugo tipped his head. “Wait, you already know Marissa plans to choose Bjorn?”
My next sip of champagne was mixed with the disappointment that he didn’t pick up on my Vegas hint. I wasn’t sure how I could make it more obvious. I had been holding him at arm’s length. Maybe I just needed to go ahead and book it. But that wasn’t the start of the romantic getaway I had in mind.
“I don’t. I’ll have them go on stage like any other couple. But you’ve seen them together.”
He blew out a chuckle. “Yeah. I’m never sure if they’ll flip a table or start making out.”
“Let’s hope for more of the latter. This episode does scare me. I have a bad feeling Marissa might pick anyone who isn’t Bjorn just because she’s so stubborn. And you know how possessive bears can be. The last thing I want is to tear apart the team because we have something truly magical. Maybe we need to film the two of them at work so they can see what we see.”
“I’m sure we’ve probably got some behind-the-scenes footage,” Hugo suggested, but then he looked up at the waiter.
I expected him to have our salads, but instead, he was holding a tablet.
“Ms. le Bonnet?”
“That’s me.”
“I was asked to deliver this to you.”
As the waiter handed me the tablet, Hugo and I shared an inquisitive look. He scooted his chair closer to mine, the heat of his body rolling off him in delicious waves.
I swiped the screen.
