Vaughn stops for a beat when I suck in a shocked breath.

Oh my God!

“So, my guy dug a little deeper. Money can buy pretty much anything and, this time, it bought the records of a private abortion that took place in London only two days after you left. The person who set it up and paid for it? Noah. Fucking. Spellman.”

I bite my bottom lip, mulling it over and coming up with nothing.

“I don’t get it, Vaughn. Why would he pay for her to abort Sutton’s grandchild after going through all that hassle of taking me out of the picture?”

My stomach sinks when I come to the realisation just as Vaughn verbalises my thoughts.

“Neither of the North twins were the father of that baby.”

CHAPTER36

SUMMER

Standingat the top of the staircase, I take a moment to calm my racing heart.

Breathe, Summer. Just. Breathe.

Several deep inhalations later, I stiffen my spine and slowly make my way towards the darkened back patio, which has cleared out substantially.

Glancing around the lit-up space, I spot Caden alongside Beau and Jake, deep in conversation.

Alyse and Cassidy are bickering over the last slice of Mississippi Mud Pie while Bree shoos Cade’s many nieces into the kitchen, citing that its way past everyone’s bedtime.

Finally, I find Jesse. He’s showing Clary his newfound poker skills, while Sutton watches on with a broad grin on his kind face.

Noah, of course, is at his side.

He glances in my direction, narrowing his eyes so slightly I’d say I imagined it if I wasn’t altogether fully sure of this man’s unfettered animosity towards me.

I shift my gaze to Cade, forcing my legs to move until I reach his side.

“There she is!”

He beams up a smile, but I can only return a shaky version. “Would you like to bring me to the stables?”

Beau and Jake begin to cat-call and whistle, drawing the attention of the rest of the bodies on the patio, and I can feel my face heat. “To show me the horses. Get your minds out of the gutter, boys.”

Jake nudges Cade, a huge grin front and centre. “Go on then, North. Show her yourhorses.”

Beau snorts behind his hand as Caden stands, entwining our fingers to lead me away from his chortling bandmates.

“It’s a bit dark to go to the stables, Bam. Let’s go in the morning when Jesse goes riding with Ford, hmm? You’ll like it—”

“No.Now.”

I cut him off, my voice coming out agitated and much higher than I anticipated. Everyone stops their chatter, glancing at us for the second time.

Jesse drops his cards, murmurs something to Clary, and stands to move closer, only for Noah to reach out and catch him by the arm.

Every square centimetre of my body moves into high alert.

Caden links his arm through mine, beginning to move in the direction of the stable, but I stand still, rooted to the spot in abject fear.

I need to tell Caden what Vaughn has discovered, away from the house and the ever-present digital Big Brother. But hell will freeze over before I trust that man with our son.
