I nod slowly, equally nervous and excited for the next words to come out of my mouth.

“I’ve decided to scale back my involvement at DeMarco Holdings, baby.”

My wife’s audible gasp fills the room as she rises to sit yoga style whilst pinning me with a questioning look.

“What? But why, Henry? You love what you do!”

I sit up, grasping her face in my large palms. “And I love you and the boysmore, Peach. I saw what a workaholic my father turned into, to the point that he ignored his own fucking kids.”

Running the back of my knuckles along her cheekbone, I slip my hand around to the nape of her neck, pinning her with an intensity I can feel in my bones.

“A long time ago, I told you no one would come between us. And that includes me. I’m done being away from you, from the kids. I can still have a behind-the-scenes role at DeMarco, but with the new baby coming, I want to be here. Withyou. With our kids, whilst they’re still kids.”

Her eyes glisten with emotion, and I can feel a lump form in my throat. I continue quickly before speaking becomes an impossibility.

“From Monday, I’m scaling my involvement back and increasing Alex’s. He’s already the face of DeMarco in the U.S. media. He’ll revel in taking a step up the corporate ladder.”

I’ve barely finished my sentence when Liv launches herself into my arms, peppering kisses across every centimetre of my face. My chest rumbles with a deep laugh.

“Oh, Henry! This is wonderful, especially now…”

She trails off, her eyes shifting down towards her stomach.

“Umm…remember I had a check-up yesterday, but you missed it because of that conference call with the Dubai branch?”

Her eyes pin mine, and I nod in answer to her question. “Yes. It was another reason on my list for scaling back at the company.”

She nods slowly, chewing on her bottom lip for a beat. “Well…we were busy at the christening today, so I didn’t want to tell you until we were alone.”

Sweat breaks out across my brow, and my heart rate kicks up a notch. “Is everything okay with the baby? With you? What—”

She catches my face between her hands, quelling me with a firm look. “It’s nothing like that, Henry. It’s…that’s to say…umm…we’re not havingababy.”

I jerk my head back, blinking in bewilderment. “What do you—”

“We’re having twins!”

THE END
