Finally, third and most unsettling for me, she wanted to go with Iris to confront their father. We now know that Victor is waiting for the money at Iris’s house, and my tiny wife is dead set on getting concrete evidence that he’d committed theft and fraud when he left her and Mari penniless.

Her determination to make him pay would be a complete turn-on if the thought of putting her in danger in order to achieve her goal wasn’t giving me a damn stomach ulcer.

“I could havebeenher, Alex! Don’t yousee? I had Lita in my corner. Iris had no one. Her mom didn’t protect her from him, butI can. I can guarantee that he can’t hurt anyone else ever again.”

Tears fill her big brown eyes. “Ican’tlet him get away with everything he’s done.”

A tear crests her bottom lashes, tracking down her flushed cheek. “He can’t ruin her life too. He needs to be stopped, Alex. He needs topayfor his sins!”

And it’s my undoing.

“Oh, sweet Jesus.” I gather her into my embrace, holding her far too tight as I press a kiss to the top of her dark head. “I have conditions before I allow you to enter the lion's den, Sunshine.”

Her gasp of surprise sees her pulling back to look up into my face, delight pouring from every pore of her unblemished skin. “I’ll do everything you tell me. I promise.”

“You can bet your sweet ass you will.”

Her lips twitch with the hint of a smile, and I heave a sigh of resignation.

“Okay, here’s what we’re going to do.”

“I don’t like this, Rey.”

“Of course you don’t. I’m hardly jumping for joy over here.” She shoots me a quelling look, arching her brow pointedly as Ford finishes taping the wire to her chest. “But a deal’s a deal.”

She shifts her gaze to Ford. “Are we done?”

He nods, glancing sideways at me before addressing Reyna. “Everything is in place. The surveillance team is a stone’s throw down the street, and we’ll be in the vacant house beside Iris’s, listening to every word. I’ve done a sweep with an infrared drone and have no reason to believe he’s packing.”

Gripping her upper arms, he gives her a bolstering smile. “Let’s get that motherfucking son of a bitch.”

Rey snorts, shaking her head with a low chuckle. “If you’re calling my abuela a bitch, you’d best watch your back. She was a big believer in karma, Ford.”

“I—I didn’t mean, oh shit, I wouldn’t ever…” He trails off uselessly, only for his mouth to drop open when both Rey and I burst out laughing.

He recovers enough to roll his eyes before striding toward the elevator. “I’ll be in the car, assholes.”

His off-the-cuff insult makes us laugh even harder, thankfully lightening the seriousness of the moment until we’re doubled over.

I sober first and gather a still giggling Rey against my chest. “The first sign of trouble, and I’m putting a stop to this. Okay?”

She nods with a tremulous smile before raising her face to mine. “Now kiss me good luck.”

I dust my mouth across hers, a bare brush before I run the tip of my tongue along the seam of her lips. She opens, ready to take me inside, and I indulge freely.

My tongue massages hers gently, teasingly, with the promise of so much more.

I pull back, breaking the kiss, and she whimpers at the loss, even as I grin, pecking the tip of her nose playfully. “There’s plenty more where that came from, wife. Just hurry back into my arms, and I promise I’ll never let you go again.”

Her eyes soften at my words. “You mean that?”

I palm her flushed cheeks, a frown claiming my face as I hold her gaze with an intensity that borders on violence.

“Tu sei il mio sole, la mia unica luce. I can’t be without you, Reyna DeMarco. Iwon’t.”

“Am I going to need to learn Italian, pretty boy?”
