I hope Henry’s not paying through the nose for this one.

“It makes me a little bit sad, actually.”

She leans even closer, her eyes flashing in delightful conviction, fully sure she’s made a breakthrough.

“And why is that, Alex?”

I frown, as though in deep thought, before nodding slowly. “Because I would give just about anything to see her again. One last time.”

So I could be the one to end your miserable life, Mother.

CHAPTER1

REYNA

Present Day

Manhattan

“See you tomorrow, Reyna.”

I wave at Simon from Legal, the last straggler heading for the elevator at Freemont Insurance, before I return to the mountain of paperwork in front of me.

Blowing out a breath through the side of my mouth, my overly long dark brown bangs fly skyward before I grab the top file from the stack on my desk.

I’m three files in and wholly absorbed, when a voice pulls my attention from the task at hand.

“Reyna?”

My boss’s boss stops at my desk, a frown marring his handsome features. “What are you still doing here?”

“Oh my gosh, Mr. Freemont!” I clasp my hand to my breastbone as I sit up with a jolt. Having been so involved in my files, I’d not heard his approach. “You scared me half to death. I thought everyone else had finished for the day.”

He smirks, flashing his perfect white teeth, teasing a singular dimple that drives the girls in the office insane.

Chad Freemont, the only son of the owner of Freemont Insurance, Dwight, is under thirty and single, with the face of a god and the body of an Olympian.

And the man absolutely knows it too.

Grace from Underwriting swears his penis is magical, although Hadley in Claims is thoroughly convinced it was his tongue that made her see stars.

The thought of lunchtime gossip makes my cheeks flame bright pink as the man in question surveys me with a knowing glint in his light blue eyes.

“I’d love to take you for dinner, Reyna…if you’re free.”

My brows almost hit my hairline as my jaw falls open. “Umm…I—I’m flattered, Mr. Freemont—”

“Please.” He leans down right over my desk and into my personal space. “Call me Chad.”

His smile widens, showcasing the matching dimple, and my mouth goes dry as an absurd thought flies through my mind.

Is he flirting withme?

I didn’t think he even knew I existed, truth be told, lowly paper pusher that I am.

I clear my throat, not knowing how to process this newfound attention. “I’m so flattered, Mr…I mean…Chad. But I really need to get this paperwork finished. I’m so behind this week.”

He nods with a furrowed brow as understanding softens his chiseled features. “Ah yes, I heard. Your grandmother hasn’t been too well this past month, has she?”
