Alex snorts a laugh. “You’ll see what I mean.”

Shaking my head, I pad in the direction of the room he’d assigned to me last night and make short work of showering.

Once I’ve dried my hair, I tuck my bangs behind my ears and quickly look through my clothes, landing on a simple white jersey dress that I found in a thrift store last year, but haven’t had a casual occasion to wear it to before now.

I slip it on, tie a slim brown belt around my waist, and loop a small brown cross-body bag over my head before slipping into a pair of white sneakers.

Taking a look in the mirror, I nod to myself before making my way back out to the living area.

The smell of French Toast hits my nose, making my mouth water. “Holy hell, that smells divine.”

Alex smiles over his shoulder from his place at the hob. “Take a seat at the breakfast nook.” He jerks his chin, indicating a small table by one of the many windows that I’d not noticed before now.

I smile brightly when I see he’s set the table with a host of side items, including what looks like freshly squeezed orange juice and a barrage of fruits, including strawberries that are almost as big as my fist.

Before I can decide what I want first, Alex drops a plated stack of powdered French Toast down in front of me. I look up into his smiling eyes, nodding my thanks as my stomach rumbles loudly.

He laughs easily. “There’s more where that came from.”

My eyes feast on the food before me while Alex slides into his seat opposite. I grab the knife and fork, cut into the fluffy bread, and shovel it directly into my waiting mouth.

A moan of sheer joy echoes between us, and I speak around my mouthful of heaven. “Sweet baby Jesus, this isamazing.”

“I’m glad you like it.” Alex pours himself a coffee from the carafe on the table, gesturing to my cup, and I nod as I happily gorge on more of the deliciousness.

Once I’ve demolished my food, I add two sweeteners to the steaming coffee he poured me, along with a little creamer, before I settle back and focus all my attention on him.

“Where did you learn to cook like that?”

He swallows his mouthful before answering. “The family cook, Iris. When my brother left home, she took me under her wing and kept me out of my mother’s path as much as possible.”

His eyes remain on mine when he shrugs as he takes a sip of his black coffee. “Her domain was the kitchen, so it was only natural that she taught me some recipes. As it turned out, I’m not half bad.”

“Not half bad?” I pop a brow. “You can feel free to perfect your skills on me anytime, pretty boy.”

His lips twitch as I realize the loaded innuendo in that statement, but I push the thought from my mind as I take a strawberry from the spread between us.

I bite into it, juices dripping down my fingers and staining my plate. “Mmm, these aresogood. Youneedto try one.”

His hand darts across, plucking my half-eaten berry from my fingers before sliding it between his own lips. He cleans his thumb and index finger, releasing them with a pop as I watch his mouth raptly.

My eyes rise to his, and I swallow hastily, my eyes widening at the swirling intensity in his gaze.

Beautiful amber eyes sparkle as they travel the length and breadth of my face before they shutter closed. His jaw locks, and he rises to stand. “I’ll be in the foyer when you’re ready.”

ALEX

Having reached the foyer, I’ve had a hot minute to cool off.

I hadn’t planned on taking the berry from her hand. I’d been utterly impelled to do so. By a force stronger than myself.

I bet she tastes sweeter than this strawberry.

The second the thought had crossed my mind, I’d known I’d stepped over a line in my head and needed to get the fuck out of my—no,our—penthouse before I did something far worse.

Like slamming my mouth to hers to check if I was right.
