She bites her bottom lip before shaking her head vehemently. “No, please don’t do that.”

I scratch my forehead. “Would you like to visit Saks? We can try as many places as you—”

She cuts me off when she blurts out, “But everything is so expensive! I saw a tag on one blouse, and it cost more than I’d make in a month at Freemont.”

My eyebrows draw together in a deep frown.

“Expensive?” A deep chuckle leaves my chest. “Sunshine, make no mistake, we are here to spend a damn fortune. That’s non-negotiable.”

“Alex, I—”

I exhale in frustration, mumbling under my breath, “I thought every female liked shopping!”

“Idolike shopping, Alex, but I feel like I’m taking advantage.”

At that, I push to my feet, cross the space, and kneel on the plush carpet at her feet.

My eyes lock on hers, holding her in place while I grip her hands in mine. “Reyna, when I said I want to take care of you, I meant it. In every way. Now, for the love of all that’s holy, get your ass up out of this seat and into these clothes before I lose the will to live. There’s only so much Bergdorf this body can take.”

CHAPTER10

REYNA

“Turn to me now,Miss Marquez. Oh, yes. That mulberry is stunning against your skin tone.”

Jessica leans closer conspiratorially. “Mr. DeMarco will absolutely adore it, mark my words.”

I can feel my cheeks flush, and my pulse kicks up no less than ten notches. I inhale deeply to try to calm my breathing as Jessica continues. “The way his eyes follow you is nothing short of true love. Hold on to that one.” She catches my eye and winks with a sweet smile. “He’s a keeper.”

I blow out my held breath as she strides from the changing area back out into the fitting room, where Alex is being entertained by a short blonde named Tiff. She’s fawning all over him, much to the disgust of the other three stylists—and myself, if I’m honest.

He’s not yours. This is just pretend.

Yeah, tell that to my foolish heart.

Alex lifts his head, his eyes lighting on me as they take in every inch of my body.

I’m wearing a mulberry purple ballgown that sits slightly off my shoulders, is cinched tightly around my small dancer's waist that I’ve somehow hung onto, and flows into intricate ruffles that trail all the way to the floor.

His eyes finally come to a stop on my face, and he smiles then, so brightly, he looks lit up from within. My face answers unknown to myself until I eventually lower my gaze as a blush covers my face and decolletage.

“I did say you could mark my words, Miss Marquez.”

My blush deepens, and Alex prowls closer with a darkened gaze that does crazy things to my insides. “Excuse us, ladies.”

His words are once again obeyed immediately and without question.

Once we’re alone, he closes the distance between us. “You look amazing, Rey.”

His eyes flicker back and forth between mine. “Every single thing you tried on today was spectacular. It will all be delivered to the penthouse later.”

I open my mouth to protest, but his index finger lands on my lips, halting my dissent.

“And that’s the last I’ll hear on the matter.”

His eyes tell me that he means what he says, so I nod slightly.

“Now, I’m going to leave for this next part, but you’re in safe—”
