She nodded, as if satisfied with his answer and then took a step back. “So what do you think will happen now?”

“I imagine she will report back to Elise that she saw me and I’m already involved with someone. So, I think the kiss worked well.”

As far as Charm was concerned it worked more than well. The way her lips were still tingling was proof of it.

“I guess we need to leave,” she suggested.

“To go shopping?”

She chuckled. “I was teasing about you going shopping with me, Dylan.”

He didn’t respond. Instead, he shifted his gaze to the tiled floor before lifting his head to level his eyes on her. “I’d love to spend time with you.”

His words surprised her. “Why?”

“Because it reminds me when we met, in the beginning.”

How could he think that? In the beginning she had been all into him and he had been all into her. He had been the one to not only fuel her desire but he had also introduced her to it. She had shared her first kiss with him. He had been the guy she’d allowed to touch her all over, even in places she’d been warned by her mother to never let a boy touch. But it had felt so right with him.

She swallowed past the knot in her throat and said, “Okay. Just as long as you know something.”

“What?”

“You made a terrible mistake ten years ago where I was concerned.”

She could say that again, Dylan thought, surprised she would admit such a thing. Charm had been a mistake, one he wouldn’t repeat. Was that the closest to an apology he would get from her? Probably. He wouldn’t hold out for anything more. At least she’d admitted that much.

“I agree, Charm, but we’re older, and I’d like to think a lot wiser, than we used to be.”

He touched her hand and when she didn’t pull back he asked, “Is there any reason we can’t put the past behind us and rebuild our friendship?”

Dylan knew he was asking a lot of himself where she was concerned. Her own words admitted she had been his mistake. So how could he even think about befriending the woman who’d broken his heart? A woman he had loved like no other? And what about his desire for closure? Graham had been right. When it came to Charm, there could never be closure for him.

But maybe they could be friends. Like he’d told her, they were older and wiser. There had to be a reason their paths had crossed here in Cancún. Normally, he didn’t believe in fate but maybe there was something to it after all.

“Is that what you want, Dylan? For us to be friends after all that has happened?”

“Yes. We can’t live in the past forever.” Checking his watch he said, “Come on. I’ll have the car brought around so we can start your shopping spree.”

A few hours later Dylan was wondering where in the heck Charm got all her energy. They had gone to four shops and a restaurant for lunch and then were back to shopping again. By the time they returned to the resort he was tired and all he’d done was sit in a corner while she’d tried on one outfit after another.

She had modeled each one and had asked for his opinion. He recalled her telling him how her brothers would take turns going shopping with her, so she was used to a male giving opinions about her clothes.

He would have to admit he’d enjoyed spending time with her today. They’d never had a chance to spend quality time together. He now understood how a long-distance romance could have taken a toll on their relationship. Dylan only wished she would have talked to him about it instead of ending things the way she had. Her not talking to him was something he didn’t understand; he thought they’d had a close relationship.

“You’ve gotten quiet.”

He was carrying bags in both hands as they walked to the car. Except for a belt he’d purchased, all the other bags were hers. She was right, he had gotten quiet, but he wouldn’t tell her what he’d been thinking since he’d been the one to suggest they put the past behind them. But he would admit one thing.

“I enjoyed spending time with you today. We never did a lot of that.”

She nodded. “There was no way we could since we were in colleges miles apart.”

“I know.” Deciding to change the subject, he said, “What are your plans for dinner?”

“I don’t have any.”

“Will you join me?”
