My gut did its twisty thing. “What’s happened now?”

“Rockfall. No one hurt, but several houses received minor damage. No prizes for guessing who owned one of them.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Did you mention Eli’s suggestion of me going back there?”

“I did, but Monty’s not sure a flying visit will improve matters. He says the targeting is more refined than he originally thought, and maybe it isn’t just the old wellspring.”

My eyebrows rose. “It can’t be the other one. Katie controls that, and there’s no way she’d attack her family.”

“Unless she’s making a point.”

“I doubt it. She knows why I’m up in Canberra.”

“Yes, but that still leaves the possibility that she’s gathering the older wellspring’s anger and directing it to less harmful outcomes. It would certainly explain why no one has been injured as yet.”

“If the old wellspring has gained some form of sentience from me, then I doubt it would actively set out to harm anyone. I mean, the do-no-harm rule is a governing mindset for all witches, so by rights that should leach over.”

“Until we know far more about the interaction between the Fenna and wellsprings, we can’t be sure of anything.”

“True.”

I unlinked my arm and pushed open the door into the parking area. The thick smell of exhaust fumes and petrol hit, and my already twisty stomach rose in protest. I stumbled to one side and threw up again.

“Fuck, Liz, are you all right?”

“Yeah.” I took the water bottle she handed me and rinsed my mouth out. “I’ve been drinking their stale coffee all afternoon. I think the combination of it and the exhaust stench just got the better of me.”

She sniffed. “Your stomach has been seriously tetchy of late—you sure you’re not pregnant or something?”

I snorted. “I haven’t skipped a period, and besides, I’m on protection.”

“Accidents do happen. When are you due?”

“I’m a few days late, but that’s nothing unusual given my period is often all over the place when I’m stressed.” And stress had certainly been piled on over the last few months. I shrugged. “Fate is a bitch, but even she wouldn’t do that to me.”

Belle grinned. “I wouldn’t be betting on it. Besides, with all the changes the wild magic is making to your body, there’s an outside chance the pill will have stopped working.”

“Very outside.”

“Still worth checking. Besides, if you do the test up here, the gossip brigade can’t report the event to anyone.”

That was definitely a good point. I sighed. “Fine. Will you be able to pick me up a pregnancy test kit tomorrow, while I’m in court?”

“Sure. And let’s hope it is nothing more than a coincidence. Otherwise, it’s going to throw a spanner in the relationship works.”

“It won’t change a goddamn thing,” I said flatly. “There’s no way on God’s green earth that I’d ever use a pregnancy to retain a man.”

She held up a hand. “I know, but Aiden may have other opinions on that. He is all about family, after all.”

“His family, not our family.” I sniffed. “And, right now, I just don’t want to think about him or pregnancy or even the wild magic getting wilder. Let’s just concentrate on the trial and getting the hell out of here.”

“What are we going to do about the sorcerer?” she said.

I glanced at her. “I’m not sure we can do anything about him. We’re not even involved in the hunt.”

“You and I both know that’s not going to stop you.”

A smile tugged at my lips. “I think the bigger question is, can we trust my father not to use these kills to his advantage?”
