Not the nearby window or even the door, but rather the fully bricked corner of the building.

And then it went straight through it.

A heartbeat later, the screaming began.

Chapter Six

Belle, I said immediately. Ring Samuel and see where the fuck he is. And lock the car door just in case this is a distraction to grab you.

I wasn’t on the list—

And maybe that was deliberate. Remember my premonition that it was a bad idea for you to come up here? This could be why.

The screaming ramped up, becoming shrill and filled with horror and pain. I had to get in there. It was probably too late to help the man who was screaming, but Deni was in there and currently unharmed.

I had to keep it that way.

Around me, lights came on. Voices rose, filled with a mix of confusion and fear. I hoped everyone remained inside. Hoped they didn’t get between me and this thing, whatever it was.

Car doors are locked, and the holy water is in my hand, Belle said. Samuel is five to eight minutes away.

Meaning he’d certainly put his foot down to get so close so fast but even so, it wouldn’t be enough to help save the screamer. He might not even be close enough to help save Deni.

I grabbed a holy water out of my pocket but didn’t uncork it. The bottles weren’t particularly large, and I didn’t want to risk spilling any as I ran.

The front door was locked, but a quick repelling spell soon fixed that, hitting the door with enough force to tear the thing off its hinges and send it tumbling into the room.

The screaming stopped, and the scent of death seeped into the wet night air.

Heart hammering somewhere in my throat, I slowed and approached the door more warily. The room beyond was bright, but I couldn’t see anything—not the screamer, not the monster. But I could hear the latter—it was clomping up the stairs, heading for Deni.

I swore and stepped inside. Saw the blood and the body parts strewn all over the living room. It was a goddamn bloody mess.

Literally.

My stomach stirred but thankfully didn’t rise—maybe because this wasn’t the first time I’d witnessed the results of a body being all but shredded.

Is a wraith capable of doing this? I asked. There’s no magic here—this is the result of brute strength.

Unless they had that sort of strength when—

Belle stopped abruptly. Fear surged through me. What’s wrong?

Nothing. I saw some movement, but it was just a man heading into the subdivision next to yours.

Instinct wasn’t entirely believing it was “just” a man, but then instinct was the suspicious type at the best of times.

Maybe you’d better leave, just to be—

Um, no.

You can park in the next street. Our connection isn’t as distance restricted as it used to be.

That may be true, but if things go haywire in there and you need my physical help, me being in the next street will be a hindrance.

I sighed. She could be as stubborn as me sometimes. Fine.

The thing had reached the top of the stairs. I picked my way through the blood and body parts as quickly as possible, heading for the stairs in the far corner.
