Yep. Monty says the volume of the wild magic is definitely increasing, but at the moment, it’s mostly restricting itself to the O’Connors’ boundaries.

Which makes sense given the old wellspring is in their compound.

Saska climbed in and started the SUV. “They’re sending up a drone, but Reggie will also head out.”

“Reggie?” I asked, even as Belle said, Drone? What’s happened?

Nothing. Just got a feeling we’re being tracked.

With no further information, of course.

Of course.

“Reggie’s one of our shifters on call,” Saska was saying. “He’s a magpie and, much like the real deal, doesn’t like to be messed with. If something is following us, he’ll soon spot them.”

I nodded, but didn’t feel any safer. But that was more likely a result of my pessimistic nature than anything else right now.

How’s Aiden doing? I asked.

Unhappy, apparently, and not just about what’s happening in the reservation. His mom is delaying his confirmation as alpha.

No surprise there. She’s probably figured out he’s planning to bring me into the fold. At least, that’s what I hoped he was planning. Katie certainly implied it, as did he.

Of course, implying and doing were two different things, and it annoyed the hell out of me that he still wasn’t being open about his intentions.

Maybe he didn’t want to get your hopes up.

I snorted. I’m well aware just how far hoping will get me. Especially while his mother remains the other alpha.

Maybe you should ring him. He probably needs to hear a friendly voice right now.

My eyebrows rose. Meaning Monty isn’t?

Let’s just say he’s still not showing much in the way of sympathy to the pack’s plight.

I couldn’t help smiling. I’d really struck it lucky when the one cousin I could stand had been assigned to the reservation.

So did I, Belle agreed with a laugh.

Saska drove out of the parking area and joined the traffic headed back to the central business district. I looked out the side window and watched the CBD roll by. I might have been born and raised here, but this place no longer felt like home.

Because you’ve laid down roots elsewhere—quite literally, given your increasing connection with the old wellspring and its deep roots into the earth. She paused. I asked Hattie to pick up a pregnancy test. Ashworth and Eli are beside themselves at the possibility.

Did you have to ask in their presence?

The minute I tried to have a private chat with Hattie, they’d have suspected something was up. They’re well aware you’ve a puking tendency of late and had their suspicions anyway.

Let’s hope Aiden isn’t as quick to pick up on it.

Doubtful. The only time you’ve lost it in his presence so far has been at a horrific murder scene when your scent and psi senses were overwhelmed.

True. And thankfully, even though a werewolf could sense hormonal changes, they were unable to scent a pregnancy until near the end of the first trimester.

It gave us both breathing room—and him time to decide whether he really did want the whole marriage and kids thing with me.

Even if he didn’t, and if I was pregnant, then I was having our child. I’d dreamed of that blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl too often now not to bring her into this world.

Of course, her birth would not be without risks, given she’d be a hybrid. Most did not survive, and those who did often weren’t “right.” Instinct might be saying that as the first true Fenna born in centuries, she would be healthy and hearty, but there were centuries of scientific evidence and experiences to suggest otherwise.
