“Our wraith does seem to like his trees.”

She cast me a quick glance. “Why is that, do you think?”

“It might have something to do with where he died the first time around. The warehouse where he killed Cat was located in the Eastern Industrial Estate near West Queanbeyan, and there’s a river, large grasslands, and forests behind it.”

“They searched that whole area and never found tracks or a body.”

“Well, they wouldn’t if his demons got to him first.” I glanced down at the ring as it pulsed. “Left at the next street.”

She blasted the horn and scattered the pedestrians just beginning to cross. A glance in the side mirror revealed several raised fists and rude gestures aimed our way. I wondered how many of them had noted our number plate and were currently reporting us to the police.

We were barely half a mile down the road when the psychic connection to my brother snapped.

I swore and tried to reconnect, but there was nothing. Not even the caress of death. He’d either moved beyond my range, or something had been placed on him to prevent psi tracking.

I swore again and scrubbed a hand across my eyes.

“What?” Saska immediately asked.

“I’ve either lost the connection or it’s been blocked.”

“How the fuck can you block a psychic connection?”

“You ask this while wearing a telepathy band?”

“You know what that is?”

I smiled. “Came across them once or twice. Powerful telepaths can still get past them.”

“Meaning Belle.”

“Indeed.”

“I’ll inform the team. We might have to upgrade.” She slowed the vehicle down. “What do we do now?”

“I don’t—” I stopped as an ethereal hand slid over mine and a feminine voice whispered, I will guide. Keep going.

I swallowed heavily and added, “Drive on. We have help.”

She hit the accelerator again and then gave me a questioning glance. “Meaning what?”

“You afraid of ghosts?”

“She’s in the car with us?”

“Her hand is on mine.”

Saska’s gaze jumped down but there was nothing to see. To be honest, it was surprising her touch was so real to me, given seeing the dead wasn’t one of my talents and it usually only happened when Belle stepped into my thoughts. Of course, with the wild magic blurring and altering our talents, anything was possible.

As the ghost directed us around another corner, the sounds of sirens began to bite through the roar of the big engine.

I glanced around. “Cops are after us.”

She grunted, dragged her phone out of her pocket, and made a call. All while driving one-handed at speed. It scared the hell out of me even though she didn’t look for a second like she was in danger of losing control.

Maybe her “somewhat shady” adventures with Samuel involved cars, cops, and speed.

“Jackie,” she said, wrenching the heavy car around a vehicle that refused to get out of the way. The tail twitched back and forth, but she had it going straight in seconds. “I’m on Barry Drive speeding toward Belconnen Way in an old blue and white Ford Fairmont. Cops are on my tail—get them off.”
