You haven’t been trained, and you don’t smear.

Not officially trained, true, but my parents run the PAC and basically taught me control from the moment the skill developed.

“Lizzie? You out there?” came Saska’s shout.

“Here!” I replied and then silently asked, What was she supposed to do?

Be on hand to stop you from rescuing your brother.

That suggests the wraith expected me to act as I did.

He would have gotten a good sense of your capabilities when you almost killed him, remember.

Yes, but to have a witch on hand, ready to retaliate, suggests he’s foreseeing my movements and reactions before I make them.

All of which would explain why the psychometry line had all but died. He’d been ready for me to play that card. Maybe it was no accident that I’d found the ring—maybe he’d wanted me to make the attempt to find Juli and then fail.

His plan might have worked, too, if not for the interference of a ghost.

We don’t know all that much about him, other than he’s a psycho dark sorcerer, Belle said. Maybe in life he was also clairvoyant. Magic and psi abilities are not mutually exclusive, as you rather aptly demonstrate.

The crunching of twigs had me glancing around again. Though I couldn’t see her, Saska was close. Did she hear or see anything that could help us track the wraith?

Belle dove deeper for several seconds and then said, There’s nothing to indicate she saw the wraith. It was one of the two men checking on her who strengthened the restraints.

She couldn’t tell which house he was from by the magic?

Not everyone has your ability to read the thread lines and pick up the house origins.

Not even me, I replied dryly.

You do it more than you think.

That was definitely debatable. A familiar scent began to ride the breeze. Saska’s almost here. Can you ensure Hazel remains compliant if she wakes?

Belle did so, and then added, Yell if you need anything else.

Always.

Belle snorted and left. I took a deep breath that didn’t alleviate the sudden wash of weariness. Deep dive connections always took a toll on both of us, so I could only hope nothing else happened this afternoon.

Saska stepped into the clearing, quickly scanning me before glancing at my captive. “What were you just doing? Mind reading her?”

I nodded. “She arranged to meet a broker about a job, but it was a setup, and she was basically kidnapped. They told her if she didn’t cooperate, they’d kill her grandson.”

She grunted. “There’s not that many gray-side brokers in Canberra, and even fewer who’d risk their reputations with a stunt like that. I’ll order a search, but it’s possible we’re dealing with an out-of-towner.”

“Hazel’s worked with him before, if that’s any help.”

She grimaced. “Without a name, it probably won’t be, but we can go through her financial records and see if there’s anything. Nice bit of binding on your prisoner, by the way.” She bent, grabbed the front of the woman’s jacket, and hauled her upright. “Let’s get back to the car.”

I led the way. “How’s my brother?”

“Loud and obnoxious.”

Staying true to type then. “And the shushunjë?”

“I removed it. It’s the reason it took me so long to get here.”
