The last message was a plea for Milly to speak to him, and a pathetic, “What did I do wrong?” wrapped in clumsy slang.

I pause with my fingers raised above the keyboard, and then type out a message.

MillyD:

DON’T BE MAD. PARENTS TOOK AWAY MY PHONE

The last thing I expected was an instant reply, but seconds after being delivered, Brent92 comes online and types out a response.

Brent92:

SHIT, THAT SUX. THOUGHT I’D PISSED YOU OFF

MillyD:

:( I MIGHT JUST TAKE U UP ON THAT OFFER FOR A NEW PHONE. AT LEAST I’LL HAVE A BACKUP

Brent92:

YEAH! WHERE CAN I GET IT DELIVERED?

MillyD:

NOT GIVING YOU MY ADDRESS PSYCHO

I soften the blow by adding winking emoji.

Brent92 says nothing. I give it a beat or two, and then add another comment.

MillyD:

IF YOU DON’T MIND MY ANNOYING LITTLE SIS HANGING AROUND, WE CAN MEET UP AT THE MALL ON FRI

Brent92:

DIDN’T KNOW YOU HAD A SIS

MillyD:

COS SHE’S ANNOYING

Brent92:

GOT FOOTBALL PRACTICE ON FRI. WHEN R U LEAVING?

MillyD:

I CAN STAY UNTIL 5

Brent92:

IT’LL BE TIGHT, BUT I’LL DO MY BEST.

I lean back in my chair, lacing my fingers behind my neck as I stretch. I have no intention of meeting Brent at a packed mall, but if I don’t act like a cautious teen, then he’ll smell trouble a mile away. It should be easy enough to change up the plans last minute, and he should be even more eager to meet now that he knows that there’s younger prey to be had.

Glancing over to where Charlotte and Arrow are sleeping, my jaw hardens.

It all hinges on Charlotte now. I need her…but I have no idea if she’ll even consider doing something this dangerous.
