The Reapers must have scared them away. Some of the guys pull into the garage while others take off down the street in pursuit of the van.

I hope they kill every single one of them.

Dante stands up to check the scene, then waves Cassie and me on. Ten members of the Reapers pull up and the guys walk over to meet them.

Dante helps me walk slowly over to his bike while Cassie goes to join Lucky and the rest of them.

“Zeke!” Cassie yells out as she takes off running toward him. He limps out from behind one of the vehicles.

Cassie jumps into his arms with ease. She wraps her body around him, holding him tight.

This girl has balls, but I guess she learned from the best.

“Easy killer,” he teases before placing her back on her feet with a grunt. She steps away from him, looking down to see her shirt covered in blood–his blood.

Cassie lets out a loud gasp.

“Oh my God, you’ve been shot. We need to get you inside,” she frets.

“It’s just a graze, Princess. I’ll have one of my guys patch me up when I leave here.”

“We’re at a hospital, but you would rather leave and have some moron work on you than a trained professional? Why are men such idiots? I don’t get it. You’re all fucking dumbasses!” she fumes, throwing her hands in the air.

“It’s the way God made us. Blame him,” Zeke says, grunting out a laugh.

Dante and I chuckle, turning away and leaving them to their lover’s quarrel. It doesn’t take long before Lucky walks over, giving his sister the third degree over her actions.

Dante and I lock eyes, and my heart begins to flutter while my hand subconsciously reaches out for him. He steps toward his bike, turning away and breaking the moment I thought we were having.

“How are you holding up?” he asks.

I shrug in response because mentally I’m fine, but physically my body is hurting like a bitch. Dante pulls me into his arms, holding me tight for what seems like an eternity. His familiar smell and warmth soothe my soul and mind. This seems like a small step in the right direction for us.

Dante reluctantly pulls away, leaving me with a feeling of uncertainty bleeding me from the inside out.

“I know I said I’d take you home, and I don’t want to leave you. But I need to find Zeke and the others so we can find out what happened to my dad. Maybe we can get a look at the hospital’s surveillance cameras or something,” he explains with apprehension in his voice.

“No, I get it. There’s no need to explain. I want you to do whatever’s necessary to find him,” I say, shifting my feet uncomfortably.

Dante knows I care about Gabe, but that doesn’t make it any easier to say out loud, especially in front of him. One way or another, we are going to have to work through all our shit, and it’s not going to be pretty.

“Will you let me know what you find out?” I ask, shying away from him.

“Yeah. It’s pretty obvious that someone’s fucking with us, and right now, we’re blind to who it is and what their motives are. It could be King, or it could be a whole new player in the game. One thing is for sure, we need to find out quickly before they have time to make their next move.”

Agreed.

We walk over to the guys in silence. Dante gets his gun from Zeke and then disappears back inside the hospital. Lucky notices me let out a yawn, then nudges Jax telling him they need to get us home.

Honestly, I’m not sure how much more my body can handle. I’ll be happy to climb into my bed and sleep for a few days.

The drive home is peaceful, but I know that will all change shortly.

The moment I walk through the door, my mom starts freaking out. She’s going zero to a hundred interrogating me about why I’m home. I look over to Cassie and Lucky, silently begging them to help me out on this one, but instead of jumping in they decide to wait outside.

Cowards.

Taking a deep breath, I fall back onto the couch. I’m exhausted and need rest, but first, I need to explain a hospital shootout to my loving but overbearing mother. Fuck. I can’t even imagine being in her shoes with a daughter who attracts danger at every turn.
