Royal jumps off the couch, starts gathering his belongings, and then heads straight for the door. He turns back to look at me.

“He’s a dead man, Princess.”

And with those final words, he leaves.

I try going back to sleep, but it’s no use. I’m restless, and my thoughts are consuming me.

A few hours later, mom meets me in the kitchen where I’ve been cooking up breakfast for the two of us.

“Good morning, honey. How are you feeling?” she asks, kissing the back of my head as she sweeps by me.

“I’m actually feeling really good, like myself again.”

She pulls out the orange juice from the fridge and pours the two of us a glass. Mom looks around curiously. “No Royal this morning? Where’d he run off to?”

I spend the rest of breakfast filling mom in on everything. Her face drops when I tell her about King.

“I just don’t get his motivation to hurt you? You’ve never done anything but love those boys and be there for them whenever they’ve needed you. It makes me sick to think about.”

“I know mom, me too.”

“Do you think you can call Lucky and ask him to come sit with you today? I have some errands I need to run, and while I’m out, I would like to go by the hospital and let them know I’m ready to come back to work,” she hesitates, waiting for my response. “But that’s only if you are really feeling better and not just trying to appease me, Angel. I ran out of vacation time at the end of last week. I need to go back to pay the bills.”

“I’m fine, mom. I promise. And I’m sure Lucky will jump at the chance to spend the day with me. I’ll call him while you get ready.”

She looks worried but places our empty plates in the sink. “Alright, but if you need me, just call, and I’ll come right back home. I should be gone for a few hours.”

A smile spreads across my face as I walk over to her wrapping my arms around her. “Thank you for everything, mom. I know I don’t say it enough but thank you. I don’t know what I did to deserve someone so great. I love you.”

“It’s my job, honey. I love you too.” She kisses me on the forehead then disappears into her room.

I shoot Lucky a text which he quickly replies to saying he’ll be over within the hour. My mom leaves just after I step out of the shower and start getting ready for the day.

I’m patiently waiting for Lucky to arrive when I hear a knock on the door. The sound has my heart skipping a beat.

I rush over, swinging the door open wide. Lucky is standing on the porch with his hands tucked in his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels.

He looks delicious in his white tee that hugs his biceps, blue jeans and sun-kissed skin. Sometimes I forget how incredibly handsome and perfect Lucky is, but it’s nice to know that after all these years my best friend can still stun me with his good looks.

“How are you feeling?” He asks, avoiding making eye contact.

Clucking my tongue, I pop my hip out and cross my arms over my chest, trying to get a read on him. “I’m feeling great, Luck. Are you going to come inside or stand on the porch all day?” I question.

“In a sec,” he says suspiciously. “On a scale of one to ten, what’s your pain today?”

“Like a two, Dr. Newman. What’s with the questions, and why are you acting so strange right now?”

He continues rocking nervously.

Is he scared I’m about to break? Because I’m not, I actually feel better mentally than I have in a while, and my body is healing just fine.

“Because there’s something I want to do, but I need to see how you feel before I do it.”

My eyebrows shoot up with a surprising grin spreading across my face. I throw my arms up and spin around in a circle. “I’m perfect. I thought you knew that already,” I joke.

I turn back to face him when I’m caught off guard as Lucky rushes me. He hoists me up into his arms, capturing my lips simultaneously.

My arms and legs wrap tightly around him like a spider monkey.
