Our heads both snap to her.

“You know what, nevermind. I’ll find my own way.” She moves toward the door as I stand frozen in my spot, but Jax moves to stop her.

She swings the door open and Sinner walks through, wrapping his arms around her and tucking her body into his chest.

My mouth drops open. She just stepped into a killer's arms as if it was the most natural thing on earth. Her chest shakes uncontrollably, and he runs his hand through her hair.

“It’s okay, sweets. I’m here, I’ve got you,” Sinner whispers to her, and she hangs onto him like he’s her only lifeline.

What. The. Fuck.

My eyes dart to Jax, and he shrugs like he doesn’t have a clue what’s going on either.

When she starts to calm down, he leans back and kisses her forehead. “C’mon, I’ll take you to your brother.” She nods, wiping the tears from her face.

Cassie turns to me with a look of disgust on her face. “None of this is my business, but Angel is my best friend. She deserves so much more than what you are giving her, Dante.” My gaze falls to the ground, unable to look her in the eyes.

“Thank you for putting aside your own feelings and doing what’s best for her, Jax. She’s the strongest person I know, and you deserve a place by her side for what you just did.”

With that, Cassie takes Sinner’s hand and leads him out the door, closing it behind her. Her words eat at me from the inside out. And when I look at Jax, the smug bastard has a grin on his face.

I roll my eyes as he rubs his hands together, pleased with himself.

“What’s it going to be, D?” He stares at me with his eyebrows raised.

*Chapter Break*

The cracked door opens wide and hits the wall with the slightest nudge of my boot. Steam fills the room as I lean against the frame with my arms crossed against my chest, letting my eyes roam over her sun-kissed body.

She shuts off the water, wraps herself in a towel, and steps out of the shower. Without looking at me, her arm reaches out and slams the door in my face, but my foot catches it before it hits me.

She lets out a deep, frustrated sigh. Gripping the counter tight, she looks up at me through the mirror.

The sadness written on her face splinters my heart. Her silent plea for me to leave her in peace.

I did that to her.

She can’t even be in my presence without being heartbroken.I guess that makes two of us, Heaven.

A moment of silence passes between us. Me, being stubborn and not really knowing what to say. Silently pleading for me to walk away.

But I can’t.

Jax is right. I need to make a choice.

I step toward her and her body stills.

I slip my hands into my pockets to keep from reaching out to her and pulling her into my arms the way my heart desires.

“We need to talk, Angel.”

She huffs, shaking her head. “No, I don’t think we do. I need to get ready so we can leave.”

She spins on her heels and tries to move around me. My hands shoot out, one grabbing her waist and pulling her into me while the other slides around her throat as I push her against the wall.

Her breath catches. I lean forward kissing the bruises forming around her neck. “I’m sorry we weren’t here to protect you from this.”

My lips move over every dark shade on her beautiful body. An ungodly need to soothe her pain washes over me.
