The sound is muffled. They’re too far away to be inside, they have to be coming from outside. Which means only one thing.

The guys must have arrived.

And hopefully our backup is seconds away from coming through that door.

My anxiety picks up. My heart pounds against my ribcage as sweat trickles down my face.

No more running, King. Your time is coming to an end.

“Sounds like you didn’t listen to instructions, little girl. I told you to come alone,” He shouts, then bobs his head to the man standing with my mom. “Do it.”

I scream and reach for the gun tucked into my jeans, but Gabriel’s faster.

King ducks behind a barrel as a loud pop goes off.

The man standing in front of my mom hits the floor with a thud.

She starts to run but comes to a screeching halt as the other guy aims his gun at her. Without a second thought, I lift my arm and squeeze the trigger.

One.

Two.

Three times until I know he’s dead.

I sprint toward my mom as my name echoes through the room.

Then time stops, and it’s as if everything happens in slow motion.

I turn my head to see the guys enter the room with their guns drawn. My eyes dart to where King is as he lifts his gun, aiming it straight at me.

A single deafening pop goes off followed by an array of gunfire. I watch as King is riddled with bullets before hitting the ground.

The white noise clouds my ears as Gabriel dives in front of me, tackling me and my mom to the ground. He falls on top of us, protecting us with his body.

The guys start shouting, joy coating their tongues.

I close my eyes and wait.

I wait for the pain to rip through me as it did once before, when I jumped in front of a bullet to save Gabriel. But it never comes.

Gunshots ring out, and I try to move my head to see what’s happening.

Dante runs toward us. “Gabe, we got him. We fucking got him!” he shouts, his voice laced with pure adrenaline and joy. “We killed him, Gabe! Do you hear me?”

“Gabe, it’s okay. We’re safe now,” I tell him. Cruz runs over, picking my mom up off the ground as Gabe rolls off me, coughing.

I glance up to see Dante drop to his knees in horror. “No, no, no,” he cries. I sit up, looking down to find my shirt covered in blood. Only it’s not my blood. If it were my blood, it would come with an agony I’m all too familiar with. My eyes drop to Gabriel and I scream. I scream and I don’t stop.

I scramble to him, pulling him into my lap as Dante begins cursing and yelling for help. “Someone please help!” Cruz drops beside us, searching for the wound, and the moment he sees it, a look of terror comes over his face. I know this isn’t good.

“It’s okay, Little Monster. You did good, real good,” he chokes out. He takes my hand, lacing our fingers together as he kisses it then pushes my palm to his cheek.

The room goes silent as the men form a circle around us. Zeke drops beside Cruz to help stop the bleeding, but they both look terrified. “Just hang on, boss. An ambulance is on the way,” Zeke says, and Gabriel nods.

Gabe turns to look at Dante. “Make sure you take care of them,” he chokes out, and Dante swipes away the tears running down his cheeks.

“No, fuck that! Stop talking like this is it. It’s not. You can’t die on me. Not now. Not like this, you hear me? You don’t get to die!” Dante shouts, clutching Gabe’s other hand, and holding it against his chest.
