“It’s whatever you want it to be,” she responds.

I frown.How’s that possible?

“What’s the last thing you remember? It took me a while before my memories of that day came back,” she says.

My brain works overtime trying to think of the last thing I remember, and then it hits me.

I was shot.

“Am I…” my voice fades out. I can’t say it. No, I need to be there. I need to protect Angel and the baby. They need me.

Gloria looks at me with sadness in her eyes. My knees give out as I sink to the ground.

“It’s okay, Gabe. I’m here. Everything’s going to be alright.” Tears streak her face as she tries to comfort me.

“I can’t be dead.”

“I’m so sorry, my love. It will get easier with time, I promise,” she replies honestly. Her hand grazes my cheek, and I look up at her.

“No, I need to go back.” I push to my feet, searching for a way out, but there’s an endless amount of nothing all around us.

She captures my face between her palms, forcing me to look at her. “Gabriel, stop. It’s done. The sooner you face reality, the sooner we can get to work,” she says.

I stumble back, dazed and confused. “What do you mean?”

“We can watch over them together,” she replies softly. “Dante and your baby. We will do our part from here.”

My face falls. The happiness I felt moments ago is now gone. “What good will that do?”

Gloria laughs. “Well, my love, who do you think brought you back from the brink of death so many times? Surely you can’t believe lady luck was on your side this whole time.”

My head draws back as I stare at her in wonder. “It was you?”

She nods. “I couldn’t save you from a lifetime of pain and agony, but I kept you alive long enough to fulfill what needed to be done. You threw yourself in front of danger at every turn without caring if you lived or died. But I cared. I knew you needed to stay alive long enough to make amends for what happened.” Her eyes shimmer with sadness. “I didn’t want you to spend the rest of eternity with that kind of torment. You deserve more than that.”

My eyes fall shut, contemplating her words and thinking about every time I was shot or stabbed and miraculously recovered. I thought I was invincible, but that wasn’t it at all.

My wife was watching over me, protecting me, and keeping me safe.

I look down at her, placing my hand under her chin. “So what now?”

She smiles back at me. “Now we make up for lost time, and we look after the ones we love.”

I nod my head as she takes my hand, leading me away. I have no idea where we are going, but I trust her, fully and completely.

If it were a dream, I’d normally wake up before I ever got to touch her. Even in my dreams, she was out of reach.

I could never picture the way my life would end, but I can’t think of a better way to go than protecting Angel and my baby.

Chapter twenty-one

Angel

It’s been a little over eight months since Gabriel passed. Things have been quiet around here.

The clubs have both resumed business, honoring the rules of their territory.

Zeke is now the President of the Sons, leading them the way Gabriel had always envisioned.
